Looking into getting a Tattoo.

I recommend Absolute Art, Salvation Gallery, and whatever Amy Black is calling her shop nowadays (it's across from Cary Court).

Are you thinking of being the first with the VCURamNation tattoo?

There is no best place in Richmond to go. What you need to do is decide who the best artist for your particular tattoo is. There are drastically different techniques used for american traditional/painterly/contemporary/cartoony as well as greyscale vs black vs traditional vs bright.

What are you thinking about getting? I know most of the Richmond tattoo artists and could probably point you in the right direction.

I'd say Absolute Art. If they can't do the style you're looking for they'll point you to someone they know that can.

Well, after shopping around, it looks like I'll have to put this idea on the back burner for financial reasons. I don't have 200 dollars of expendable cash laying around at the time so I'm going to hold off. Thanks for the suggestion guys, it really does help!

Don't forget that you're expected to tip pretty decently for a tattoo, and artists generally charge by the hour, not by setting a set price before starting the tattoo.

Also, if this is your first tattoo, don't get ripped off. A good rate should be about $100-120 an hour, sometimes some people might take advantage of your ignorance and try to charge you way more.

Not always true. Some artists simply always charge more. You're not going to get tattooed by Jessie Smith for $100 an hour if you're just some person off of the street. You mentioned Amy in your first post, doesn't she charge $180-200 an hour?

Also, other random advice: don't be afraid of a larger size than you might be imagining. A tattoo should fill the space it's in, and you'll be happy with going larger with it as time goes on as ink fades, blurs and blends.

200? darn last time I was there it was $150, but she could honestly charge anything she wants.

I could be wrong, but that's what I heard recently. I haven't actually seen Amy in about a year. But, yes: She's good enough she could charge just about whatever she wants. Same with Jessie Smith, Thea Duskin, Jimmy Chamberlain, etc. Richmond has a ridiculous number of phenomenal, world-class artists.

ZOMBIE THREAD ALERT!

So I am going to be getting my first tattoo sometime soon, and I was wondering if anyone has any input into artists around RVA I should go to. It's going to be simple - just text - but I don't anticipate stopping there. At some point, I will have a giant Ram head on my chest.

Thoughts? Thanks.

"Property of Chris" is a pretty easy tattoo and most any artist will be apt at doing it. Just make sur eits their Biggest font for a tramp stamp and I would like it in Comic Sans
