Mack McCarthy Out as ECU's Coach

East Carolina’s search for a new men’s basketball coach will likely extend beyond the NCAA tournament, athletics director Terry Holland said Sunday.

Holland, who reassigned third-year coach Mack McCarthy to a newly created fund-raising role on Saturday, said he will act as expeditiously as the list of candidates allows.

“I think this is something that I can sink my teeth into and be as competitive about this as I am about basketball,” he said. “I’m excited about it, really, and I know there’s going to be a void there that’s going to be difficult to fill.”

Does anyone really believe that?

Believe that he would rather be doing that then coaching? No. Although I wasn't around for the McCarthy years at VCU based on what others have said about him it sounds like that is a job he might be more suited for though. When he was back in town for the ECU vs VCU game he seemed to talk a lot of pride in the facilities and atmosphere at VCU. His part in that is his legacy at VCU as opposed to his W/L record. Could end up being the same at ECU.

Yeah, I think I can sign off on that. Mac's size should be able to nicely fill any void there.
