Wayne basketball star Markus Crider, who pulled of his letter-of-intent Sunday at Providence after coach Keno Davis was fired, has gotten a lot of attention from a variety of schools but apparently isn’t being targeted by Dayton.

Warriors coach Travis Trice said the 6-foot-6 athletic small forward is being pursued by Northwestern, Penn State, VCU, Northern Illinois, Indiana State and Miami University, among others.

Strengths:
Markus is a skilled and talented combo wing. He can play small forward or shooting guard. He has good size and athletic ability. Markus has great versatility offensively. He is a good slasher to the basket. He can go either right or left though he prefers to go right. He has a developing pull up game and is a solid shooter out to 20 feet. Crider is a solid rebounder, his strong body allows him to battle inside amongst the big boys.

Weaknesses:
He is a decent defender that has the tools to improve with added intensity and conviction. Markus does need to improve his motor and become more productive. He is not always assertive enough. He can certainly improve with added strength and aggression.

Bottom Line:
Markus is a very talented and skilled wing. He has the tools for greatness. He is a great talent with tremendous potential. Crider is athletic and is a solid shooter to 19 feet. He can score off the dribble or catch and shoot. He has improved his productivity this season but is not quite the same level as his talent would dictate. Once Markus turns his potential into production the sky is the limit on what he could be.

Notes

Travel Team: King James Shooting Stars...Committed to Providence in Oct. 2010...Averaged 14.0 ppg and 10.8 rpg as a senior...Released from letter of intent to Providence in April 2011...

Certainly is interesting and sounds very talented...with Trev and Reco being freshmen next year is timing right for his size/skills? Coaches know more than I can even speculate...just seems like with one scholly we need a big, especially after adding Briante and Teddy.

2011 is over -Guest gonna sign tonight or tomm book it

Until we see that LOI ... anything is possible!

Definitely sounds like Markus Crider may be in our backup plans.

Yeah i would wait until he signs on the line! However i hope he stays a backup. We dont need a SF this year and if we can ger Burgess's younger brother i would hope we get Guest (PF) over a SF next year.

Hmmm...while I guess that a visit could be cancelled by either party, this suggests that we may be ready or needing to go a different direction than Guest with our final scholly for 2011. This, or else there could be another scholarship opening up...though this would seem doubtful to me.

or our coaches like to be prepared, just in case.

Most of the Mid-American and Missouri Valley conference programs have offered Crider. He’ll visit 2011 Final Four participant Virginia Commonwealth this weekend and Northwestern the following week.

Besides those two, he also lists Penn State, Northern Illinois and Indiana State among his final five.

Trice said that Bradley coach Geno Ford has a spot open should Crider choose to fill it.

“(Ford) said, ‘We’ll bring him out tomorrow if he wants to come,’ ” recalled Trice.

Cross off the Juwan Staten/Markus Crider college connection.

Penn State University received a verbal commitment from junior college 6-4 forward Matt Glover on Tuesday. That fills its final available men’s basketball scholarship for the coming season. He’ll have three seasons of eligibility.

Staten has signed with the Nittany Lions after opting out of Dayton following his freshman season. He won’t be eligible to play until the 2012-13 season.

Crider, a 6-5 senior forward at Wayne High School, was given a release from Providence after a coaching change with the Big East program and listed Penn State among his final five picks. Northwestern, VCU, Northern Illinois and Indiana State were his most recent top choices.
