MCCARTER, BRADENBURG SIGN LETTERS OF INTENT TO JOIN RAMS NEXT YEAR

RICHMOND, Va. – Length and athleticism are two key components to the “Wreaking Havoc” style of play of Virginia Commonwealth University Head Basketball Coach Shaka Smart.

On Wednesday, the Rams added two players who possesses both of those traits with the signings of Reco McCarter (Goldsboro, N.C./Wayne Country Day) and Rob Brandenburg (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln H.S.).

“We’re extremely excited about the addition of Rob and Reco to our program,” Smart said. “Both are multi-dimensional players that will thrive in our up-tempo style. Just as important, they are high character young men who will bring a terrific work ethic, on and off the court, to VCU.”

McCarter has been recognized as one of the top players in the state of North Carolina by several recruiting services and should make an immediate impact for the Black & Gold.

Ranked as the 35th-best small forward in the country by ESPN.com, McCarter brings a 6-7, 185-pound frame to the Rams that can score in a variety of ways and is prepared to shine in Smart’s up-tempo style of play.

“Reco has a very well-rounded skill set and possesses terrific size and length,” Smart commented. “His ability to handle and pass the ball at high speeds will be ideal for our style. Reco’s length and athleticism give him the potential to be an outstanding defender.”

Known for his speed and quickness, he brings an ability to score from anywhere on the floor and wreaks havoc on the defensive side of the ball.

During his junior campaign, he averaged 18 points and seven rebounds for Wayne Country Day High School.

“Reco is a guy who continues to improve,” said Dave Telep, Scout.com’s national basketball recruiting director. “Athletically, he’s a good board man, and the Rams will put his live body to use. As his jumper improves, he’ll be able to step back and make shots. Fits their ‘havoc’ style perfectly. He was built to run, defend and use his athleticism.”

He chose the Black & Gold over Boston College, Charlotte, Virginia Tech and Clemson among others.

Brandenberg is a lengthy 6-2 guard that gives the Rams an abundance of athleticism on both the defensive and offensive ends of the court.

“Rob is an explosive athlete who thrives in a fast paced game,” Smart said. “He handles and shoots it very well and has the ability to consistently make plays in the press.”

With a 6-7 wingspan, Brandenberg creates a match-up nightmare at the two-guard position with his ability to slash to the bucket or pull up from mid-range.

“This is a big time coup for Smart and his staff,” ESPN.com's Director of Recruiting Paul Biancardi said. "Rob is a late bloomer who played jayvee as a sophomore before becoming all-league as a junior on the varsity squad last season. He's a diligent worker who invested time into his game with individual skill development and it paid off in a big way.”

In a breakout junior season, he averaged nearly 20 points, six rebounds and three steals a game for the Golden Lions.

Brandenberg chose VCU over offers from Akron, Ohio, Loyola-Chicago and Wright State.
