Mel committed to Fran McCaffrey and the Saints last night. Can't argue with that as they are a top 25 team this year coming off of two straight NCAA tournaments with first-round wins over Ohio State last year and Vanderbilt the year before. They are ranked #2 in the mid-major top 25 and just outside the national top 25 to start the season. Hope Mel has a great career at Siena but that he never suceeds against VCU if we ever play them!

well put DB. I was hoping we would land him, seems like a great player. But we really, really need a C to replace Larry. At this point I have my heart set on Donte Williams.

Well it was pretty clear on here that most of our fans preferred Lalanne or Williams over Basabe anyway. No shame in him going to Siena, they are a very hot program right now. If we get Williams I think none of us will mind at all that Basabe did not come here. It seemed like Siena was the one on him for the longest and wanted him the most. Add to the fact that they are the highest-ranked program of the 3 right now and its no surprise he chose Siena. Good luck to the young man.

On behalf of all the Siena fans on the Siena message board, I would like to thank districtballer for his classy posts there. I have been following this board for the past few weeks and realize that VCU fans are every bit as passionate about the Rams as we Siena fans are about the Saints.

VCU has been a top mid-major program for several years, despite Jeff Capel's departure for Oklahoma. My sense is that you will overcome Anthony Grant's move to Alabama and continue to be a major force in college basketball. And if we aren't selected to go to Indianapolis in February to play Butler, I hope we can play the Rams in the Siegel Center.

Best of luck with recruiting Donte Williams.

Thanks KnickSaint! I hope we do get to meet up in the Bracketbuster as well as that would be an excellent game for us. I'm sure pretty much every team that is hosting a home game this year is hoping to get Siena as they are one of the top mid-majors in the country this year according to the preseason prognostications.

this is what i expected basically from the start where Basabe was concerned and will wish him luck at Siena.

Siena's Fran McCaffrey is leaving Siena for Iowa according to ESPN. Not sure where this puts us as far as Melsahn Basabe since it was down to VCU, Siena, and Drexel when he decided. I doubt we have any spots left now and we have a higher-rated big in Juvonte Reddic now, but it'll be interesting to see if we are on his list if he reopens his recruiting.

yea i kind of brought this up in the Hofstra Pecora which has become coaching movement thread. I could certainly see us on his list, but not sure he would be on ours just for the spot issue. wish him luck though.

Can't sign everybody. I think Drexel would be the logical destination if they have a spot open.

is it that unlikely that he can just stay at Siena depending on the replacement of course?

Other threads on RamNation seem to indicate Veal is not a done deal, although he is supposed to either be visiting this weekend or this coming week [not clear?].

Question: given this year's incoming recruiting class [and one early signee for year after] even if Veal doesn't sign do we:
1. Have renewed interest in Basabe if he reconsiders Siena?
2. Ignore Basabe and other similar earlier VCU targets who may have second-thought situations?
3. Pursue another signee [IF] Veal doesn't commit?

Inquiring minds want to know...

[Given the Larry/Saintil/Grayson comments swirling around RamNation...I'm not sure "who's on first" anymore, to quote an old comedy routine].
