Following his tremendous month, Basabe earned a plethora of scholarship offers, ranging all the way from the America East to the Big East. Nevertheless, playing at the highest level isn’t Basabe’s top priority, going somewhere where he can play a lot of minutes is.

“Playing time and playing style are the big factors in my decision,” Basabe told the New England Recruiting Report. “I want to play for somebody who gets up and down and lets the players play their game.”

“VCU, Siena, and Drexel are my favorites…they’ve all offered,” he said. “As of right now those are the three that I’ve brought it down to but I’m still minimally open.”

When it comes to the remaining three schools that are on his list, there’s something different he likes about each of them, although Basabe did make a point of mentioning how he felt really comfortable with all three coaching staffs.

“Siena was excited about me before the summer even began,” he said. “Drexel has a close relationship with the Gauchos and VCU is just a really impressive program.”

You are on point when it comes to getting this recruiting info. Glad he is impressed with our progam. Based on what I have read so far I am impressed with him as well. Hopefully we can get two of these bigs we are after for 2010 to sign on the dotted line. Here are a couple more links about this guy. Based on the hight and weight the scout info appears to be a bit dated, but he is a 3 star on scout and has an 89 rating on ESPN.

Chill, this is an impressive find on your part. I'm particularly intrigued by the insight this young man has into his circumstances. We could be on the cusp of something really special in our recruiting here.

Thanks for the timely info. I'm not as experienced as you and some of the guys here are at following our recruiting year to year, so I don't know how excited to get about this, but this guy's comments make it sound to me like we have reason to be pretty hopeful here.

Go Rams!

Definitely some varying info out there on this kid. From 6'6, 165 to 6'7, 215!

NERR proflie lists him at 6'8. Hopefully closer to 215 and still growing. We like long arms. Sounds really impressed with VCU (as he should be!!). Sounds like this kid has a lot of "go get it". Tough to teach that.

"Melsahn Basabe ’10, St. Mark’s (MA): Siena, Stanford, Boston University, Northeastern, Hawaii, St. John’s, George Washington, Pitt, Wake Forest, Fairfield, Rhode Island, Fordham, Bucknell, UPenn, and Old Dominion
Offers: Fairfield, Rhode Island, and Fordham
Favorites: “Not really right now because my recruiting is coming up to a new level.”
Dream School: “A Big East school that fits my style of play or a really good academic school in a high-major conference.”"

This was posted 7/6/09. Looks like he was geting some attention from some very good programs. His current choices seem to contradict his prior statement. He has obviously considered the playing time issue at these bigger programs and changed his mind with respect to a high major conference (at least at this stage of the game)

Well, since the Times-Dispatch wants to focus on door breaking incidents gotta be proactive in finding out stuff we're really interested in.

Looking at the "lets the players play their game" statement, it could also mean given his size he would've been expected to play SF at a high major and perhaps he's more comfortable playing PF. May be a bit undersized to "play his game" at a BCS school.

He kinda sounds like a Bambale Osby-type of player.

Maybe Recruit Recon can share some more light on him for us

Judging from his well thought statements and the fact that schools such as Stanford and VCU, of course, are recruiting him, I would say he is very intelligent. So let me think, a young man that is smart, very talented and understands our program, he's a keeper.

So, again I have to add to this thread, what do we do is Melsahn, Michael Bradley, and Reco McCarter commit along with Rob? 4 young men, but only two sure spots and maybe one more opening for 2010. What a great problem to have. But then again I really like the players on our team. I don't know who I would be ok with not getting their schollie renewed to make room for an extra recruit or two.

I'm not having a good feeling about McCarter's interest in VCU right now. Seems like he really wants to go to Wake if they'd ever offer and not having anything come out connecting him to VCU lately is kinda discouraging.

As we all know you never know about recruiting and so much goes unreported or misreported. But the same way I had a gut feeling about Brandenberg being a done deal before the visit, I'm feeling the opposite about McCarter (keep in mind this is based on nothing tangible).

If I'm not mistaken this candidate has high academic expectations. If that's the case, I think we've got the edge here over Drexel and Sienna.

Please tell me you're joking. I have no idea about Siena's academics, but Drexel is one of the most highly regarded academic institutions in the country, not to mention the CAA.

Sure, it's not quite W&M-caliber, but then who in our league is?
