If I'm not mistaken this candidate has high academic expectations. If that's the case, I think we've got the edge here over Drexel and Sienna.

Please tell me you're joking. I have no idea about Siena's academics, but Drexel is one of the most highly regarded academic institutions in the country, not to mention the CAA.

Sure, it's not quite W&M-caliber, but then who in our league is?

Umm...Siena is a private school with high academics as is Drexel. VCU would be at the bottom of this list if we are ranking it that way. We are in with Basabe because of how impressive our basketball program is. His exact words.

Couple of things:

1) You might be right as far as VCU's overall ranking amongst those three schools, however, depending on what he's interested in studying that may be Irrelevant. He may be interested in an academic program at VCU that rated higher nationally than the same program at the other schools.

2) He didn't specifically say "basketball program" he said "program." He could be referring to the basketball program, could be referring to the university as a whole, could be referring to a specific school or department within the university. Can't assume he just referring to the basketball program (though he probably is).

He was talking about our bball program, not our arts school. ;)

I guess you are right regarding VCU's standing as purely and undergraduate institution. I'm biased as I attended VCU for grad school only. USNRW has VCU undergrad as a tier three while Drexel is at #88. Siena can't be compared as it is a liberal arts school although it ranked at #121 amongst those. The grad programs at VCU are a completely different ball game:
Rankings
VCU holds a number of national rankings, US News & World Report graduate rankings include:

1st - Sculpture
1st - Nurse Anesthesia
4th - Interior Design
4th - Fiber Arts
4th - Fine Arts
4th - Graphic Design
4th - Health Services Administration
5th - Glass
8th - Painting and Drawing
9th - Multimedia/Visual Communications
12th - Ceramics
13th - Dentistry[34]
13th - Occupational Therapy
13th - Rehabilitation Counseling
14th - Social Work
17th - Printmaking
18th - Community Health
18th - Women's Health
21st - Pharmacy
25th - Physical Therapy
39th - Secondary education
40th - Education
47th - Nursing
50th - Creative Writing[35]
57th - Clinical Psychology
57th - Public Affairs
67th - Medical School (Research)
Top 50 - Teacher Preparation

While Drexel has some good programs they also have this:
The Princeton Review ranked Drexel 2nd for "Campus Is Tiny, Unsightly, or Both," 12th for "Professors Make Themselves Scarce," 7th for "Long Lines and Red Tape," 14th for "Least Happy Students," and 15th for "Professors Get Low Marks".[18] Radar Magazine also ranked Drexel's campus as the ugliest in the nation.[19] However, in recent years, greater strides have been taken to beautify the campus.

I guess it depends upon what academic program a candidate is seeking. Basabe did initially state he was interested in an Ivy League school...which I can't believe would be only for their basketball merits

Georgetown head coach John Thompson III, George Mason head coach Jim Larranaga, VCU head coach Shaka Smart, and Siena head coach Fran McCaffery were among the 30 division I college coaches in the St. Mark’s School gym on Sunday afternoon.

George Mason, VCU, Siena, and Drexel all sent their full staffs to see Melsahn Basabe. The talented forwarded has trimmed his list to those four schools and has already scheduled official visits to all of them

I guess Mason's in the mix now as well. Just show them our 5-1 record against them the past 3 years and the fact we have an NBA first round draft pick in Eric Maynor, and another one going in Larry Sanders. We play the conference tournament in our city every year and the commissioner and the league loves us. Plus Mason already has a glut of young highly regarded frontcourt players that are already amassing playing time in Michael Morrison, Ryan Pearson, and now Johnny Williams. We are graduating KP and Gwynn, and Larry very well may be leaving as well for the draft. The frontcourt is WIDE open. You will absolutely have tons of playing time from the get-go and def. more than Mason can offer.

Interesting that Mason has worked their way in with two guys we are high on....Coach L must like losing to VCU more than twice a year

Not sure why we'd want to show them a Maynor highlight film. You know he's not here any more right? :D

It's the last time we played them. I think that's significant. He should know the recent history between the 2 teams. He was begging for Maynor to graduate for the past 3 years and now he's begging for Larry Sanders to leave for the draft after this year. Basabe should realize that if he commits, he'll have Jimmy L. begging him to leave for the next 4. 8-)

We got plenty of highlights of us whooping up on Mason before Eric Maynor was a thought some better ones after though!

Honestly, as long as they still have that banner hanging up in Fairfax, I don't see Larranaga doing too much begging.

We'll see if we still dominate them without one of the greatest players in the history of the CAA.

I was being facetious.

Melsahn Basabe, PF, 6'7, St. Mark's (MA), n/a
Favorite: Siena
2nd in Line: Drexel
3rd in Line: Virginia Commonwealth
Watch Out for: Rhode Island, Pitt

Basabe has already stated that his top three are Siena, Drexel, and Virginia Commonwealth, meaning that he will almost certainly go the mid-major route. The big man has also said he would like to play in the Big East at a top-notch academic school, and Pitt is one of the schools showing interest that fits the bill. If the Panthers' other options fall through and Jamie Dixon decides to offer Melsahn, who is from New York and played with the NY Gauchos, he may wind up there, but that is a long shot. Rhode Island is another school that is still trying to make a play for Basabe. It will probably be very tough for URI to overtake Siena, Drexel, and VCU though. Speaking of those three , it would definitely be a surprise if the St. Mark's standout opted to go to a school outside that trio. It is hard to tell which program has the lead, but right now I would handicap Siena as the favorite. Fran McCaffery is a quality recruiter and Basabe seems interested in the program. Bruiser Flint of Drexel is another superb recruiter, and if Melsahn wants a city school, the CAA program would likely be his choice, as it is right in Philadelphia. Although I have VCU at number three, new head coach Shaka Smart is about as likely to land Basabe as the two McCaffery and Flint. Smart is searching for a quality big man in his class of 2010, but unlike the other two, Basabe does not seem to be priority number one, which is part of the reason why the school might be just a bit behind. It is hard to tell which of the three Melsahn will end up at, and although I would say Siena is the favorite, it is too close to truly tell with any certainty.

With Harris off to the roosters I would assume Coach Smart is focused on

1. Bradley -C
2. Lee -C
3. Lulanne -C
4. Basabe - PF
5. McCarter -SF
