Melsahn Basabe

Pav: Ah you have no idea of the magnitude of this thing. If Nipple Talk is allowed to infiltrate this world, then the Pav as you know him, Ceases to Exist!

You see, right now, I have Facebook Pav, but there is also VCURamNation Pav. That's the Pav you know, the Pav you grew up with -- VCU Basketball Pav, Opera Pav, Blaine Taylor Pav, Bawdy Pav.

Half-Baked McBride: I, I love that Pav.

Pav: Me Too! And he's Dying Half-Baked McBride! If Facebook Pav walks through this door, he will Kill VCURamNation Pav! A Pav, divided against itself, Cannot Stand!

tarheel mel... you seem to be somewhat connected to Mel and his camp. any idea of when the new decision date or at least timetable is and if he is leaning to any of the 3 or maybe a most to least likely? thanks.

Not somewhat. Decision should be fairly soon, a lot to consider, every school has done a great job recruiting him and have things in their favor. I don't want to give a specific date, and then he decides he needs more time, it will happen when he decides.

Nope. If I did I would tell you.

His initial deadline was Wednesday but was then pushed back because he hadn't had enough time to think about it. The only word is that we'll hear news shortly. We'll find out soon enough. Payne said he will know by signing week where he's going which leads me to believe he's waiting to see where everyone else is going first. I honestly don't see how Donte Williams comes to VCU with a Tennessee offer on the table...but I've been wrong plenty of times before.

I agree it is one thing to compete with the Auburn's and Georgia's of the SEC, but a team like Tennessee is a much different beast. Frankly we were lucky with Reco because I think we all know if Wake had offered he would be there and not coming here as well.

I do think we have very good chances with both Basabe and Payne and that is not just about who we are competing against, especially in Payne's case because of how open he has been about his desire to be here. Basabe has been a fast riser since the summer and would be an excellent get. My feeling is if he was 2 inches taller it wouldnt just be the Seton Hall's and St. Johns of the Big East that would have offered him, but the bigger programs and his national ratings would be higher as well so he would be an excellent get for us. The wingspan is a big thing for Basabe because it makes up for those 2 inches I was referring to. The thing that Basabe brings at least in reading the reports that even some of the other big men we have gone after dont appear to is established scoring from the post with multiple moves from the drop step to the jump hook. time for Mel to come to River City.

I believe Mel is the #35 PF on Scout so he's no slouch in the rankings either. For reference, Reco was the #38 SF in the 2010 class. Mel is a quality player that would be an impact player at VCU, esp. given our lack of depth in the frontcourt. In Payne's case, we were his top school for a while and then Auburn came on VERY strong late with a home visit by their coaching staff in Ohio, they convinced him to visit and now Auburn is right up there with us. It's no guarantee that Payne commits to VCU. I do agree that out of the remaining targets, he's probably the best bet to commit though.

Another thing to think about is the fact that Basabe is a part of the NY Gauchos AAU team, a great basketball program that I'm sure our coaching staff would love to get connected with for future recruiting.

At no point in anything i said did i hint that he was a slouch, in fact i said exactly the opposite. What i said was if he was 6 9 he would be top 15 if you need me to add numbers to it instead of 35 after they reranked and 60 as he still is listed on ESPN. I even specifically said he would be an excellent get for us. Basabe also does fit a much bigger need as to me Payne is very much like Reco, but it never hurts to have quality players like them in your program.

Only thing on the numbers you listed, i dont personally buy that 35 at PF and 38 at SF makes them equal automatically. That would be like making a list of the top SF's in the NBA vs the top C's, not always equivalent just because the ranking is.

Man I'm not sure why you're so defensive everytime I post something. Take it easy lol. I'm not sure I understand why you feel the need to dissect everything I post. There's no doubt that he would be ranked higher as a 6'9 guy. My only point was that he's already quite highly ranked as it is, not trying to one-up you or anything. There are a lot of kids who go to much more high-profile schools with lesser rankings than what he already has.

As for numbers, that was only to show that they are similarly ranked as top 40 players at their positions, which is a rare thing for a mid-major like us. Don't read too much into it.

When is Melsahn due to reach a decision? I thought this was the week. (also just thought he deserved a bump back up the message board).
