So does this mean that the team they beat in the elite 8 gets credited with the final four? or does it not work that way

I don't think it works that way. If you gave Texas a final four banner, what do you do about UCLA who they beat in the semis? what about Texas-Arlington, Mississippi State, or Michigan St. who they beat in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds?
