Both squads earn multi-year APR scores in top 10 percent
RICHMOND, Va. – Both the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball and men’s tennis teams have long been known for their success on the court.
Recently, both were recognized for their achievements off of it, earning multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
The NCAA’s APR calculation includes eligibility, retention and graduation to provide a clear picture of the academic culture of each sport.
“Both of these programs have dedicated countless hours both on the court and in the classroom and deserve this honor,†Director of Student-Athlete Advising Sofia Hiort-Wright commented. “It’s really a testament to all of the people that make up the great support system that surround these athletes, from the coaches to the parents to the academic advisors.â€
In NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams only 36 teams qualified out of 342 programs. VCU is one of only 10 teams in the country that received high academic achievement honors and also qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Other NCAA Tournament teams that received APR recognition include BYU, Dayton, Duke, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina, Texas, and Villanova.
Along with its academic success, VCU men’s basketball finished as Colonial Athletic Association regular season and tournament champions with an overall record of 24-10.
The Black & Gold was one of only four CAA men’s basketball programs recognized along with Drexel, George Mason and UNC Wilmington.
The men’s tennis team has been recognized many times over the years for its success both on and off the court. Head Coach Paul Kostin helped guide the Rams to an overall mark of 17-9 and a date in the CAA Championship match for the 14th time in the past 15 seasons.
James Madison and Delaware were the only other two CAA men’s tennis programs recognized by the NCAA.
