The men's basketball roster for 2010-11 is now up on the official VCU website. There were a couple of things of interest that stood out to me. DJ is listed at 7' 250 lbs. If this proves to be accurate it certainly bodes well for the Rams. From what I'm being told this is close to being on the money. However as we all know once real practices begin some of these guys will shed some weight.

Juvonte is listed at 6'9" 225lbs. and Heath at 6'8" 240 lbs. Nice - real nice!

Also of note is that Brad is listed at 6'6" 225. I point this out because we have used Brad some at the four(4) the past couple of years and he has been effective there. With his bulked-up frame he gives us some more flexibility if we have to use him some there. He is really a physical specimen now.

I also noticed that McCarter is listed as a 6'7" Guard. While I see him more as a SF at this juncture I realize three's are often listed as guards these days.

I really like the size this team brings to the table. This is a BCS size roster!

Saw some of these guys in the commons Breakpoint room the other day playing some billiards pool. They all look a lot more built solid and athletic than what the pictures have shown. Reco looked less skinny from the vid feeds and photo, more solid. Reddic looked beastly, tall with an extremely athletic look that I can def imagine him running down the court with our full court press style. All in all, the guys looked completely solid and freakishly athletic. No doubt these guys are the real deal and look to definitely be fit enough and freakishly athletic enough to run our full court press this season and in the next. All that's left is to see how well they pan out on the court, because there's no doubt they'll be getting playing time.

Lookin forward to the season!

Keep in mind, the only thing less reliable than cable guy appointments are the "official" heights and weights listed by college basketball programs. Didn't they list Johnny Story as 6'6"?

Can someone tell me something about David Hinton. I've seen this guy several times and when i see him i'm like, "now that dude looks like a player." He's 6-9, 235? How is he not improving to the point where he can contribute? I know he's been a walk-on, but does anybody have any info about his game? If he's around this team and this quality coaching staff and practicing against the solid level of talent on our team how can he not be getting better? I dunno if its a pipe dream, but i would love to think that by the time he's a junior or senior that maybe the light switches on and he blossoms into a player. Anybody have any insight here on this guy?

This isn't Carolina or UCLA.... but I think a lot of people just don't understand something. Those programs are the best of the best. That said... the quality of basketball player at the elite mid-major level is incredible. These guys are the best. Superior athletes with serious skills. Some more skilled than others, and some more ready than others. I'd love to believe that David Hinton, specifically, and in general, the David Hintons of the basketball world, can make a difference. And he may. But the reality of it is.... he is not in that same elite category of athlete, shooter, ball handler, rebounder, etc.... He is what he is.

I just hope he fully utilizes his opportunity to get a quality education, and perhaps make somewhat of a name for himself around town, so that maybe he can have a promising career after VCU, in whatever he decides to do. If I were him, that's what I'd be after. But IMO.... do not look for him to break out. Hope I'm wrong on this one, though. :ugeek:

Chill - I totally agree with you regarding listed heights and weights on official rosters. That's why I usually add the caveat "if accurate." I have however been told these are pretty accurate numbers. In my mind it's all relative anyway because virtually every program exaggerates players numbers as well. If we list a guy at 7' who is actually 6'11" and the next program lists a guy at 6'10" he is likely actually 6'9". I'm more interested in ballers than heights and weights. At the end of the day that's what's going to tell the tale.

Rambo - I agree with you regarding walk-ons. People just don't understand the athleticism and skill-set required to flourish at the Elite Mid-Major level. Most non-scholarship players at this level just don't possess those attributes or at least to the degree required. What gives Hinton a chance is his size and the fact that he had a reshirt year.

Believe it or not, these height and weights are pretty accurate. Guys who are in the middle, i.e. 1/2'' or 3/4'' sometimes get the benefit of the doubt, but that's about it.

That's another great point. I too love the 6'11" athletic types. The Larry Sanders and Wren Watsons of the world. But they are not easy to come by. And in fact, sometimes we really do make too much of it. A great case in point is Troy Godwin. I admit... I was not super happy when I found out he was "the answer" in the middle for us, during a really important point in VCU basketball history. I mean... we had Doles, George, and Dom Jones, all with major experience. And we had the highly touted shooter- BA Walker coming in, along with Jesse, a bit of an unknown at the time (some thought he would need a couple years to blossom), and even had solid back-ups in Harper, Reed, etc.

My point is this: I wasn't looking for a guy like Godwin as the answer. A 6'5" ish type- that looked like a short P/F. But guess what? He ended up probably being the best center we had in years- maybe in conversation with LF Licholitov, who was a Beast. Troy flat knew how to use that big ole' body to play the position. It was hard to get around the guy around the hoop. Hard to score on him, rebound on him, and just to get around in the paint. He was a really good player. And that's why I agree with RAMification. I'd rather have the baller any day of the week, than the all-airport guy that can't get it done. Now.... if you can get 6'10" super-athletic ballers in here.... then that's awesome. We're about to find out what we've got coming in.

While Hinton hasn't had the opportunity to get on the court, he is still a very valuable asset to our team. big tall guys with decent playing abilities are very hard to come by. The rams need Hinton to help go up against guys like Haley and Reddick in practice. Hinton makes our team and players better. I'm sure he would love to be able to get into the game more but we all should be thankful he has stuck with our team and helped our team become better.

Ooops! That's right- "Ren." Isn't his real name Lorenza? I was just in Farmville for dinner, and checked out a cool kayak shop- Appomattox River Paddle Co. A nice Saturday. And actually, it was the Sat before last. Anyway, whilst driving in with my girls, I thought of Ren. He was the King of Swat! :ugeek:

I had a customer named "Wren." But she was a female, of course. Sorry Ren!
