Mercer expected to announce football program

There has been a T-shirt for sale at Mercer University for years: “Mercer Bears, undefeated since 1942” with a football in the middle.

That was the school’s football program’s final season. The T-shirt likely will need to be reworked as Mercer has scheduled a news conference for Friday, when it is expected to announce the return of football to the university.

Mercer president William Underwood is expected to go before the school’s board of trustees Friday morning to seek approval to reinstate the program. The news conference is scheduled to be held after the vote by the board of trustees.
