What about a Mid-Major winning all four post season tournaments this year?

That would be pretty neat wouldn't it?

Butler in the NCAA, Dayton/Rhode Island in the NIT, VCU/SLU in the CBI, and Pacific/Missouri St. in the CIT.

Would be pretty cool to see for sure.

if butler won the national championship I don't think we can really call them a mid major anymore lol

Well then they should leave the Horizon League because it is the very definition of a mid-major conference.

No but I completely agree with what you're getting at. I bet a lot of people at this point don't consider Butler a mid-major as it is already. More along the lines of a Gonzaga/Xavier-type program (Major program in a non-major conference).

I disagree... the term "mid-major" indicates various things... athletic budgets, media exposure year in and year out, etc... with the primary thing being conference affiliation. It has nothing to do with how successful a team is as far as wins and losses. If one accepts the idea that being successful, even to the point of winning a championship, and being a mid-major are mutually exclusive, then you're buying into your own ghettofication... of being separated into an underclass that self-identifies as being unable to succeed.

Butler has succeeded while still being Butler... they didn't have to become Indiana or Kentucky to do well.

Whats the definition of a Mid-major?-How about athletic budgets over 20 mil that win 85% of all games with teams below the 20 mil conference average. Doubt Butler is anywhere close to that or Xavier either for that matter.

I agree with what you guys are saying but when you win a national championship you are then thrust onto the national scene, have more money for athletics, etc etc. So while yes they are still a mid major, but if they were to win a national championship I think all those things would fall in line to move on up.

I agree somewhat, but my counterpoint is GMU's final four run. They had their 15 minutes and have now faded back down to our level. However, where I do agree with you is that they've been consistent for years now and if they win the national championship that will only cement their status, get them the national exposure, stronger OOC opponents, and most importantly.....boosters who will keep them there. But my point is it wouldn't be solely based on the championship and it's been in the works for years.

School- Athletic Dept Budget/Men's Bball budget (2009-in millions-per BBState.com)
Butler- $11.2/$1.7
URI- $19.5/$2.7
Dayton- $17.7/$3.4
VCU- $15.9/$2.8
StL- $13.4/$3.1
Pacific- $13.9/$1.7
Missouri St-$13.8/$1.8

Duke- $71.1/$13.9
WVU-$53.4/$5.9
MSU- $60.9/$9.0

So yes, I would say Butler has more financially in common with us, then they do their fellow Final Four Contestants. Duke spends more on Basketball, then Butler does on their entire AD (which has football I think). Side note, Butler also is doing the "most with the least" of the schools noted.

If Butler wins the National Championship, it means a mid-major dreamed big and PULLED IT OFF. They may never repeat, or may come close again and just miss reaching the final four for years on end. But one national championship earned by such as Butler would be worth 10 earned by a UNC, or Florida, or any other privileged-6 program. Us little guys have to do it the hard way. We've gotta be smarter with the money we have. But the satisfaction Butler (and other mid majors) receive is commensurate with the difficulty encountered.

Cool post, vcu70. Thanks.
