New 2011 Commit - Treveon Graham

Ok, I have been a RAM fan since 1978. I have never been close to being in the Know during that time. Thanks to VCURAMNATION.com and before that the CAAZONE, I feel like an insider. So in the last five years we have some great recruiting classes. I thought Larry, Joey, Ed, and Brandon's class was the best before they played. However, the 2010 class is probably higher rated! That said, the 2011 class may be even better! If Shaka can mold them into a team, lookout! I know they still have to play and any recruiting ranking is just a snapshot, but if we get just 5 of the 8 players to play to their ranking, we will be in the true golden age of RAM Basketball! We still have to play, but the odds are getting better and better.

Is it November yet?

The VCU Rams secured their third commitment of the season. Shaka Smart landed one of the program's key recruits in Treveon Graham.

The VCU Rams locked in on a Leonardtown (Md.) St. Mary’s Ryken product early in the process. That dedication and commitment was key as the CAA program secured a commitment Monday night from Treveon Graham, a 2011 wing.
An 18-point a game scorer as a junior and all-league performer, Graham had offers from Cleveland State and Northeastern. Clemson, Cincinnati, Marshall and George Mason looked at him during the summer, according to Katrina Graham, Treveon’s mother.

“They came in early,” Graham said. “They showed more interest than anyone and to me and my son, we felt that my son was a priority to them. VCU always considered him their No. 1 recruit. My son is shy and they made him feel comfortable.

“They see him as the scorer. He’s the wingman. Last year they recruited mostly bigs and in his class they recruited two kids already who are guards. My son’s a guard too but he’s a scorer.”

VCU committed a lot of summer resources on Graham as one member of the staff was in attendance every game he played in July. “They’ve been to practically all of his games this summer. They’ve been recruiting him hard. The other schools, we heard from them here and there. We felt that they really, really wanted him.”

Graham’s a shy kid but his mother pointed out the comfort level her son experienced with the Rams. “(Assistant) Mike Jones, that’s one thing I can say, he did an excellent job recruiting him. I can tell when someone is fake. Any questions that we had, (Jones and Shaka Smart) answered them straightforward and they were always available.”

Graham is VCU’s third commitment in 2011. The Rams secured verbals from Pierra Henry and Briante Weber.

funny ... seems we keep bumping Clemson (no surprise I guess they just follow Shaka around), Marshall, Cincy and GMU

Treveon Graham excited about VCU

If Graham decided to wait out the recruiting process he would very easily end up on BCS-type program's recruiting radar. He is an impressively built wing with tremendous upside. He is young (16 years old) for his grade, but already understands the nuances of scoring.

Hopefully somebody who is an ESPN Insider can provide more details.

my thought is, if he is bcs radar, why doesn't espn rate him instead of their generic "40" score.

Here you go. fron ESPN Insider:

VCU's basketball program has put together some outstanding runs during the past decade, but recent player signings/commitments by current coach Shaka Smart and his staff has the Rams in potential position to be the next Butler/Gonzaga (a program with the potential to consistently make a deep run in the NCAA tournament).

After posting a 27-9 record in his first campaign while bringing in six new recruits for the 2010-11 season, Smart has quickly positioned his program for a bright future. The recent commitment of 6-foot-5 small forward Treveon Graham (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) along with 6-3 shooting guard Pierria Henry (Charleston, W.V./South Charleston) and 6-3 combo Briante Weber (Chesapeake, Va./Fork Union) brings the 2011 class of early pledges to a total of three.

If Graham decided to wait out the recruiting process he would very easily end up on BCS-type program's recruiting radar. He is an impressively built wing with tremendous upside. He is young (16 years old) for his grade, but already understands the nuances of scoring.

Instead, like the others, he has bought into Smart's vision of accomplishing something special VCU. Graham's Triple Threat coach Arty Jones believes that VCU was a great fit.

"Treveon wanted to go to a school that had a winning program, provided an opportunity to play as a freshman and was close to home. VCU provided all three so it was a natural fit." Jones said. "He's a quiet and polite young man, but he will compete when he is on the court. I like to call him a silent assassin."

In the past, most players seemed to get caught up in the hype of trying to go to the highest level possible regardless of playing opportunities. Today, with programs like Butler, Gonzaga and George Mason going deep in the NCAA Tournament, getting great exposure and sending players onto the NBA, more recruits are giving serious looks to programs like VCU as a viable option.

"It just felt right," Graham said. "I get along great with the staff and really like their style of play. They have a lot of good players and they get it up and down the floor. I think we can accomplish special things there."

Every program relies on the coach's ability to procure talent. If Smart can continue to attract quality players such as Graham, the VCU faithful will have plenty of special things happening to their basketball program.

Great article from ESPN Insider--thanks for posting.

Perhaps best thing about this young 2011 incoming talent will be the very strong 2010 class that will be getting their rookie season experience this year. As our three outstanding seniors say good-bye this year, RamNation can greet Trev, Henry and Brian next year. Now that is something to smile about!
