VCU's basketball program has put together some outstanding runs during the past decade, but recent player signings/commitments by current coach Shaka Smart and his staff has the Rams in potential position to be the next Butler/Gonzaga (a program with the potential to consistently make a deep run in the NCAA tournament).
After posting a 27-9 record in his first campaign while bringing in six new recruits for the 2010-11 season, Smart has quickly positioned his program for a bright future. The recent commitment of 6-foot-5 small forward Treveon Graham (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) along with 6-3 shooting guard Pierria Henry (Charleston, W.V./South Charleston) and 6-3 combo Briante Weber (Chesapeake, Va./Fork Union) brings the 2011 class of early pledges to a total of three.
If Graham decided to wait out the recruiting process he would very easily end up on BCS-type program's recruiting radar. He is an impressively built wing with tremendous upside. He is young (16 years old) for his grade, but already understands the nuances of scoring.
Instead, like the others, he has bought into Smart's vision of accomplishing something special VCU. Graham's Triple Threat coach Arty Jones believes that VCU was a great fit.
"Treveon wanted to go to a school that had a winning program, provided an opportunity to play as a freshman and was close to home. VCU provided all three so it was a natural fit." Jones said. "He's a quiet and polite young man, but he will compete when he is on the court. I like to call him a silent assassin."
In the past, most players seemed to get caught up in the hype of trying to go to the highest level possible regardless of playing opportunities. Today, with programs like Butler, Gonzaga and George Mason going deep in the NCAA Tournament, getting great exposure and sending players onto the NBA, more recruits are giving serious looks to programs like VCU as a viable option.
"It just felt right," Graham said. "I get along great with the staff and really like their style of play. They have a lot of good players and they get it up and down the floor. I think we can accomplish special things there."
Every program relies on the coach's ability to procure talent. If Smart can continue to attract quality players such as Graham, the VCU faithful will have plenty of special things happening to their basketball program.
