New Around the Horns

love it.

Recently, Sanders was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50. In addition, Sanders was recently seen saving puppies from a burning building, rescuing Timmy from the abandoned mine and curing polio.

FYI,

Of late, I've been including at "Throwback of the Day" in the Around The Horns Daily Blog (on the weekdays, at least).

http://www.vcuathletics.com/ramnote/ath-blog.php

Today's (Tuesday) features a couple of pages from a 1973-74 game program, including a team photo and a letter from Chuck Noe. I hope you guys enjoy this stuff as much as I enjoy digging through it. It should be noted that there were no fewer than four beer ads in the program, and that it also included men's water polo, women's swimming and wrestling schedules.

Anyway, if you read through the blog, just look for the Throwback of the Day if you're looking to remember the good ole' days or just want to get a chuckle and laugh at the old-timers. Whatever works for you. I'll try to get one or two pics up most days.

Fine piece of research, Rollins.

VCU won that game vs. ETSU, 96-55, to open the '73'-74 season. The Rams finished the season with 12 straight wins, including 8 games over the 100-point mark.

As for the "JV team," I don't believe they ever played a game. Ed Tatum (with big afro) was from Martinsville area and wound up as a VCU starter during Kirk's "walk-on" season. Tatum, who is about 6-8, lives in Chesterfield and plays on a 50-and-over rec team of much success.

Randy Hammel (Colonial Heights), Rhea Saltz (Beneditine), Morris Fultz (Petersburg) and Bernard Boyd (New York) were only around one year - but they were all full scholarship. Fultz is the cousin of Moses Malone.

Coach Charles Moses, a Fan District pharmacist, was Noe's long-time sidekick ... and how about that young Mike Pollio - wearing a pair of slacks that just won't quit.

The only real "JV team" that I know of was in 1970-71, when freshmen Jesse Dark, Greg McDougald, Bernard Harris, Howie Robertson, and others, played a few games - including a victorious tournament at Louisburg Junior College over Thanksgiving Weekend.

Soon, they were moved to varsity and the freshman team - coached by Bill Chambers - was scrapped.

In NCAA D-1 hoops, it was standard to have freshman teams before freshmen were allowed to play on the varsity. For example, Lew Alcindor (UCLA), Pete Maravich (LSU), David Thompson (NC St) and Barry Parkhill (Va.) all played a year of freshman ball before moving to varsity. That would be unheard of today.

The photos have also been posted on facebook, but in case you haven't seen them, Shaka and the men's basketball team visited Jacobs Road Elementary last week.

There's a photo gallery in the Around The Horns blog: http://www.vcuathletics.com/ramnote/ath-blog.php

It's the top item under Monday, Oct. 5.

They're posted on the VCU Athletics Facebook page.

I'll go ahead and provide the bump this week since Chris is likely still winded from that workout.

Practice starts TODAY! Between what we have heard and seen regarding the workouts that the players have been going through and this article about how the coaches have been preparing I am sure that practice will be intense. I don't know how the rest of the CAA is preparing, but I have a feeling that the 14 players in VCU jerseys are going to be ready for battle.
