Marcus Freeman will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University where he will major in Business Administration. VCU is Division I in the Colonial Athletic Association. He leaves Park View as the schools all-time leader in both career and single made three pointers. He has accepted an invitation from the basketball program to try-out for a walk-on position.

Park View High School is pleased to announce that Marcus Freeman has broken two boys’ basketball program records for three point shooting. Marcus, a senior point guard and shooting guard, will graduate in June having completed and tremendous career. He will hold the following records:

3 pointers made in a season – 58

3 pointers made in a career – 146

Why is he not going somewhere on a scholarship?

I'm from that area. My mom worked at Park View for many years, actually.

No school in all of Loudoun County is known for sports. We regularly had national debate team champions, and I once won the VHSL One-Act Best Male Lead in a One-Act Production, but nothing impressive athletically has ever come out of the school district. (Andrew Hoffman, who was in my class, might still be an end or a tackle for the Bengals, but beyond that I can't name a single person.)

Either way, I'll have information regarding this kid as soon as I can. Shooting out emails now.

Marcus is a 5'11 gaurd that led a team 6-13. He was 38-58 from FT line, 38 rebounds and 33 assists in 19 games. No floor shooting stats that I could find.

From the picture, the first thing i though of was BA Walker. Smaller in stature, wearing the # 20, and the positioning of his shot, in the picture.... maybe he's the next Bobby Anthony! Wouldn't that be nice- especially from a freebee!!

States above he is PG/SG - if he pans out might provide some added and needed depth at 1 position. Speaking of walk-ons, I thought I saw elsewhere on this board that G is no longer with us - is this true? If so, another walk on to help out in practice, and possibly in games is welcome addition.

Grant Hill went to south lakes high school....that's close enough (Sterling/Reston) :D

That's Fairfax County, we actually claim some good athletics programs, unlike Loudon :D

Sometimes...probably before your time but don't forget about our very own Marlow Talley. Marlow graduated from Broad Run High School in Loudoun County. He transferred from Cleveland State (JUCO) to VCU and wore the black and gold from '94-'96. In fact, he was on the '95-'96 team that won the CAA Tournament our first year in the league. He went on to play professionally in Finland, Germany and Qatar.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, We already have a few good three point shooters in rozzell, rodriguez (hate all you want, he still led the CAA in 3PT% last year), and burgess. Those three along with Gavin-Theus-Daniels, a group who i have a feeling will produce at least one consistent shooter from behind the arc as well, and it would seem we are pretty set in that department.

That being said it's exciting a player with first team accolades in any district in virginia would be interested in competing for a walk on position at VCU. Nothing brings out the best in players like a little competition.

Just to throw in a couple other recent athletes from the fairfax county area area (i know its a little OT from the walk-on discussion)

Scottie Reynolds from villanova went to herndon, he is projected to be a second round pick in the upcoming nba draft i believe. Had a pretty nice finger roll game winner against PITT to get NOVA into the final four.

Eddie Royal, second year reciever on the Denver broncos is a stud as well, he went to South Lakes for a year, PVI, and then i believe westfield? Ended up starting first game of rookie year and beasted out with 146 yards and a tochdown on MNF, not a bad debut.

In addition to Scottie Reynolds and Eddie Royal, another Herndon native that deserves a mention is Barry Johnson. A three sport standout at Herndon High School (football, basketball and soccer), Barry went on to play football for the University of Maryland and was an all-ACC selection. He played in the NFL for the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers before a medical condition ended his professional career. I was a freshman at Herndon High during Barry's senior year and was fortunate to play football that year with one of the best in the country!

Back on topic...welcome Marcus Freeman! We'll take all the long range shooters we can get!

walk ons are essentially practice players that (a) help the team prepare, and (b) represent an insurance policy. They are guys who were solid in HS but aren't going to be prime time in college. They are guys that love basketball and want to keep it going, understanding that they are going to be putting a ton of work into practice, but not getting much air time at games. They are probably closer to "student-athletes" than many. I say, "wecome aboard."

For VCU, there have been some unique exceptions, but as rule, the above is true.

Do you remember if the Shropshire brothers were walk ons? :?:

greg was not a walk on. not sure about bobby, but he didn't last long.

Pete Strayhorn was an exception - he was a walk-on starter on a weak Polio team. Wasn't JPR technically a walk-on his frosh year?
