Down 17 points with 11:02 left in the game, the Tulane men’s basketball team rallied back to trail by one point with 1:28 left, but could not overtake VCU in a 78-77 loss on Saturday afternoon in Fogelman Arena.

“I am disappointed in the loss, but encouraged by the way we played,” Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. “I am happy with how we came out after three straight losses against a really good VCU team.”

Tulane shot 50.9 percent from the floor for the game, including hitting 15 of 25 shots in the second half for 60.0 percent. VCU also shot 50.9 percent from the floor in the game and hit 53.8 percent in the final 20 minutes.

“We shot 60.0 percent in the second half and in the last three games we just did not play well in the second half. To see us get some momentum and to get a direction was good,” Dickerson added.

Bad defensive effort in the second half. We can't let good opponents shoot 60% from the field in the 2nd half or we'll lose for sure. I'm sure the coaching staff is working on this as we speak. We have to keep up the defensive intensity on the road.

i think shaka's substitution patterns tell me he is still seeking the right group for certaiin situations. not an unexpected development for a first year coach. consider it a work in progress. much rather try to figure out how to hold a 17 pt lead rahter than try to overcome one...

seems we were almost done in by a zone defense...again...we have to find some consistency when shooting from the outside. CAA foes will play zone against us until we can break it. I think Shaka is having troulbe fielding a lineup that can hit the j's while maintaing some efficiency on the boards.

We can't let ANY opponents shoot 60% from the field, unless they are taking 10-15 fewer shots per half than we are. We need defensive tenacity through an entire game, not just when we need it. We also need to stop trying to trade buckets with teams. That has yet to play to our advantage, as we're usually the team who ends up getting cold and falling off.
