Hello VCU... looking forward to a hard fought game tomorrow night. One way or another I'll be rooting for the winner of the FSU vs. VCU game for the remainder of the tournament. I've been reading some posts on the boards and it seems that some of you may be doubting FSU's defense. Even I doubt FSU's offense at times but the defense is for real. I also have noticed that some of you like namecalling. I'm not going to resort to that. I'm not even going to talk any smack. I'm going to let some pretty well respected coaches, Coach K (Duke) and Thad Matta (Ohio State) do it for me. Here are a couple of links from post game press conferences this year.

"How do you prepare for something that you haven’t seen?" Coach K said of FSU’s aggressive play. "They were good. Tonight wasn’t about us being bad, because we were almost good enough to win the game. This was about them. They were really good."

Matta: "They have the pieces to the puzzle. That may have been one of the best defenses I have gone against my entire life. We couldn't get an easy shot the entire 40 minutes."

Again, I think this is going to be a close, hard fought game. FSU needs to find a way to handle your press and hit some shots but FSU certainly isn't going to make it easy for your guys either. I know that you've heard it from other team's fans before and then laid the wood them but you might want to prepare yourselves for a tight game tomorrow night.

This game has low scoring written all over it...if we continue to play as well as we've been playing and FSU sticks to their identity...well...it's gonna come down to a war of wills...either way...it should be one helluva game.
Best of luck to pwall...

No doubt FSU's defense is good. I've seen some games this year and they have been impressive. It's gonna be a hard fought game and probably be down to the wire. As far as namecalling I haven't seen really any of that but I might have missed it.

Looking forward to this game also and no doubt itll be hard fought. I didnt see the OSU-FSU game, but looking at the box score I dont see where the achievement was? Sure FSU held them to 58, but they still lost by 14 at home. No doubt though that defense is your strong point and both teams have a lot to be concerned about in facing each other tomorrow. It will be much better than your average 10 vs 11 game I predict.

LET'S GOOOOOOOOO.

I don't think anyone's been name-calling in regards to FSU. There's a sh-tload of name-calling otherwise, though. Disregard the idiots on the board (there are always idiots), we respect your D.

I think it'll be tough, especially if we lost any focus. If we have a tough shooting night, I don't think it'll be much fun. That said, you guys seem to play into our style of play somewhat with your tendency to be turned over. We match up well in terms of being long and athletic.

We shall see!

I will be very suprised if this anything like the Georgetown or Purdue games for VCU. While both of them were good defensive teams neither are as good as FSU on D. Aslo, I think we played 3 games in 5 days...for a team like VCU that is a real advantage. Our style can be hard to prepare for without much scouting and prep., and the less time to prepare against VCU the better [no CAA teams would have run with us like USC, Georgetown or Purdue, and the in conf. games/scores reflected it].

The interesting thing about being a mid-major is 1) BCS schools don't have much media awareness of us, and 2) few BCS teams will play us...so they don't have a comparison. [UVA/VA Tech won't play us--been that way for years now. Last ACC team I recall playing us on a neutral court was Maryland a couple years ago, and after we beat them they wouldn't schedule again. We played Wake this year at their place but only becuase of NIT. I believe we played Miami a couple years ago in an Island tourny...we had two NBA first rounders on that team and lost, ha!].

I think the keys to the game for VCU are 1) dribble penetration against FSU D [zoen or man], and bigs staying out of foul trouble. Keys for FSU are 1) not allowing turnovers create quick scores, and 2) FG% above 40% from field. Whole game will be a battle of tempo...

Beyond emotion I have no idea who wil win. For what it's worth, at the end of the season I had VCU and VA Tech in the first round of the NIT.

Duke just getting smoked did very little for my arguement there. With regard to all the talk about mid-majors and them not having the same level of athletes, the past few years have completely debunked that theory. Calling teams like Gonzaga and Butler mid-majors is insulting. VCU seems to be following the same type of format for success. Get a great coach that says what he means and means what he says, get character guys with high basketball I.Q., then devise a system that allow their strengths to be utilized.

As for our game. The Skeen matchup scares me a bit. Bernard James is a great defender but he's definitely an interior guy. If they're matched up, I can definitely envision Skeen starting out in the post and then rotating toward the perimeter, opening up some driving lanes. FSU switches well and has a stable of long and athletic guys that challege shots but the schemes will be interesting.

I'm sure that you've all had a lot of fun watching your team develop this year into the team that it is now. Same for an FSU fan. Its been a fun tournament. Enjoy the game tomorrow guys.

This game will likely come down to the one thing everyone seems to neglect: free throws. Florida State shoots 66.5% from the line. That's tied for 270th in the country.

Free throws doomed USC, and will likely doom FSU if the game is tight.

Maryland didn't schedule us, that was part of the BB&T Classic set up by a third party. They certainly won't schedule us now.

We need to get off to a good start. If we get ahead early, it's gonna be really tough for them.

Hate to play devil's advocate here....but their length scares me...It terms of shot blocking ability, they have three guys that have close to larry sanders type wing-span...I think we can do this but we've got to be able to penetrate...if they cut off our penetration, they win the game....

I remember watching the VCU/GMU game at the patriot center last year..the color analyst said the way to beat a shot blocker is to take it rignt at him!!!

Nixon, brandy, and Jrod should see alot of playing time and take it to the rack as much as possible.
