Not on Vilarino's list?

4. Several marquee programs are looking for a point guard. Who else is out there besides John Wall?

Point guard might be the most important position in college hoops. The list of programs searching to fill a need at the 1 includes Duke, Kentucky, Florida and, possibly, North Carolina.

John Wall is the best PG on the board, but the list of talented guards looking for a college extends beyond him. Here's a few to watch:

• Eric Bledsoe is a pass-first PG who can run a team. He had previously been committed to Ole Miss.

• Lamont "Mo Mo" Jones (New York/Oak Hill Academy) is a high-energy, strong-scoring point. He recently decommitted from Virginia Tech and is now said to be leaning toward USC.

• G.J. Vilarino (McKinney, Texas) is a quick, lefty lead guard. He is a pass-first 1 who can run the offense and knock down the midrange jumpers. Vilarino was released from his letter of intent to Kentucky when the coaching change occurred.

Man we would love to be able to land this kid. Him and Theus would be an unbelievable freshman class considering how late Shaka had to start recruiting either of them.

I’m excited and looking forward to seeing many of our new players this coming season! Several of these individuals will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact. In particular, I believe G.J. Vilarino will be a star should he choose VCU! We are accustomed to having an NBA caliber PG run our offense and I believe G.J. could be the second coming of Eric Maynor. I’m confident that G.J. will achieve all of his goals as a student and athlete at VCU.

From a Gonzaga blog... interviewed some Kentucky fan site... thought this final Q&A was interesting...

TSSF: Ultimately, do you think GJ is the type of player that would fit in to the Gonzaga system, and does have the talent and skill set to deserve a scholarship from Gonzaga?

A Sea of Blue: I do think GJ is a solid backup point guard for Gonzaga, and he could become really good if he fills in and learns to shoot the ball well. Right now, his talents are not such that he could come in and start for a team like the Bulldogs, but he will get better, has some really good intangibles and is as athletic as they come. His speed and acceleration will make him very tough to press.

From a Gonzaga board...

I'd much rather see Gary Bell, Brett Kingma, or Nick Johnson a Zag over this kid. We already have our own Villarino-type in Meech running the point for the next 3 yrs and it'd be nice to see an elite shooting PG compliment Meech rather than copy Meech.

More than anything I'm happy we might actually have someone to back up Meech next season.
Between '09 - '10, how many PG offers do we have dangling out there? At least three I'm aware of and every PG happens to be 6'0" or under. Can you imagine Meech(5'11"), Kingma(6'0"), Aaron Bright (5'10"), and/or Vilarino(6'0") as the future backcourt at Gonzaga? They'd be filling in the void left by Bouldin (6'5"), Gray (6'4"), and Gibbs (6'5"). Our future guards seem a bit vertically challenged, if you ask me

From all I've read on Vilarino and Gonzaga, it appears that he would come off the bench next year ASSUMING they don't red shirt him due to an "Anthony Grant"-like 6... potentially 7 new recruits.

As much as I respect Gonzaga, I just don't see Vilarino going there. I'm sure I'll be proven wrong once again...but if he wants to play next season I don't see him signing to play in Spokane.

I don't believe Baylor has offered either...

It's gettin interesting...go get him Shaka

Vilarino is very High on VCU and Gonzaga. VCU has slight edge prior to the visits.

Don't get it twisted, if he was to choose Gonzaga, he would not be sitting on the bench for 2-3 yrs. 1 year max and would get 15 minutes per game his first year. He's very talented and way under-rated. He has a chance to special.

I don't doubt that for a second.

(Intro Steven A. Smith)...HOWEVA!...he would double those minutes at VCU right from the jump. And if his talent is as underrated as I think it is...VCU will be ridiculously loaded next year with him distributing the ball to a starting 5 that could include at some point not only Larry Sanders and Bradford Burgess, but 6'8 3 point shooting Wake Transfer Jaime Skeen, and MAAC rookie of the year transfer (12+ points/game) Jay Gavin who I have heard can flat out light it up from anywhere on the court.

Man...gotta love the idea of having 4 guys on the court (no offense Larry)...who can step outside the line and hit the big shot at the same time.

I'm just worried that he signs after a great visit to Gonzaga and we do not get a chance to really recruit him. So hopefully he does not commit today or tomorrow.

6'4 SG Mark McLaughlin committed to Baylor. They also got Memphis de-commit Nolan Dennis as well. Hopefully that helps push Baylor out of the picture a little bit.

They have one scholarship remaining, but it looks like they want to go after a big with the last one or hold it for next year. They have a glut of guards there now. I really think it's between us and Gonzaga right now.

C''mon Shaka...shock the CAA with a big late period signing...good luck coaches
