* Tournament confirms what we know: we are good with high expectations, yet can/must play better.
* If Joey/Jamie stay healthy we can/should reach NCAA with a very solid [inside/outside] 1-2 punch.
* Many exciting frosh but only Brandenburg provided significant MSG contribution, thoughts?
* Offense is ahead of defense at this stage in schedule...first time I recall thinking this in November
* Upper tier of CAA can play with any BCS conference [CAA challenge is to improve lower tier]
* Hofstra had to be loving our MSG contribution to their (conference) credibility
* Excited about 1) improved rebounding, and 2) improved FT shooting; post-press D still needs much focus

Offensive rebounding is significantly better. Definitely exited about all the second chance opportunities.

Amen to that. I cant remember if/when in the last 3-4 years we've rebounded this well on the offensive end.

I guess they were timely rebounds, because we got killed on the boards today - 43 to 28.

Now that this tournament is over
1. What would you say we did best in the 4 games we played? (Winthrop, Wake Forest, Tenn. and UCLA).
2. What would you say was our worst aspect of the 4 games?
3. If there was an MVP...who would get it for VCU based on their overall performance in the 4 games?
4. If there was a Least valuable player... who would get it for VCU?

* I don't pay attention to the boards in the offseason and ignore for the most part the threads on recruits during the season. I don't buy into all the hype over recruits at any level, show me what you can do when you are in the VCU uniform in games that count! Even Maynor didn't do a whole heck of a lot in the early part of his freshman year, and the first Preseason 1st Team All-American as a freshman in forever and a day has led his team to 2 early season losses! Relax, cut them some slack, let them get used to life in college and the speed of the game and the level of the competition, both to get some time within their own roster and with what the other team throws at them compared to what they saw in high school!

* The defense isn't too far behind, this is a very good thing and will be a VERY good team before it's all said and done! It is absolutely amazing that the program has produced 2 1st round NBA draft picks recently, but with a team that most likely will send nobody to the NBA, this team just may give us more to remember!

I think we're going to get outrebounded every game as long as we shoot as many threes as we do. Not saying that's a terrible thing, just got to hit a lot of those shots. I like how confident Shaka is in his shooters, and hopefully that confidence spills over into the team....but we know how the old saying goes with the 3-pointers.

Larry Sanders is easily one of my favorite players to wear the Black-and-Gold, and his length and athleticism are unlike anything I've ever seen at VCU...That said, I haven't seen a VCU big man as talented as Skeen. He's got real post moves, is incredibly aggressive on the glass, and has a legit long range shooting touch. Just gotta find out who's going to step it up down there with him. It looks like small ball is going to be our MO with Brad playing that roll, but I think some games are going to require a Veal, Haley, Hinton, or Reddic to step in and give Jamie a passing outlet down there a la Will Thomas and Jai Lewis several years ago at George Mason.

i think we got a pretty good dose of Veal -20 minutes -and am hoping he continues to work himself into playing at this level. He is showing flashes of being really special

Very good point. First few games this year I was very concerned about our rebounding and FT%. I see both improving, which gives me good feeling about season. Perhaps some of the early rebounding problems are also due to our bigs learning 3 pt. awareness and positioning. I certainly see the attitude to rebound in Veal, Skeen and Burgess, so perhaps positioning/understanding is improving with repititon. This teams jacks more 3's thus far than any other I can recall. I do, however, think we have the shooters for it.

3 pt shots leads to erratic rebounding and rebounding statistics...if you shoot in close and crash the boards you get more offensive boards like odu since they miss so many close shots...3 pointers bounce further out and are often shot while people are out of position

Add to that the fact that Brad is one of our best and most frequent 3-point shooters, and when we play that small lineup that has Brad at the 4, if and when he pulls the trigger from downtown then we only have 1 big underneath to fight for a board...
