ODU Tired of Larry Sanders Hype

They aren't tired of the hype....they are jealous of the hype Sanders and VCU are getting.

The post-season arguement they make is absurd. Sanders was raw (with great potential) his first year...but came on in just his Sophomore year when Eric was a senior. That right there explains the post-season.

Finally....had is not been for ODU fans proclaiming Lee head and shoulders better than Sanders, I don't think we would even be talking about this. We didn't go to them first and say Sanders was better. They got jealous and started whining.

ODU and VCU have good teams...we have had better success recently in the CAA.....and for a number of years against ODU. But give ODU credit in taking it to the finals/semis...whatever it was in the NIT. That certainly is an accomplishment.

Man these guys dig deep to find mud to sling at us. I knew it was just a matter of time before somebody plays the "two NBA first rounders/should've accomplished more" card. Wonder what excuse they'll use next season when they're predicted to win the CAA and finish in third place.

1 - Flu
2 - Injury
3 - Referees
4 - CAA Commissioner
5 - CAA Tourny in Richmond
6 - unbalanced schedule gave other teams easier opponents
7 - tougher out-of-conference schedule wore them down
8 - 1 through 7

9 - Homecourt disadvantage.
10 - Larry Sanders didn't block nearly enough shots. (Everyone knows the opposing coach wants Larry to get at LEAST 5 blocks a game.)

I would bet the house that in a couple of years ODU will care less about it's basketball program. Football will be a force down there and possibly grow into a D-1 level program. ODU basketball will be lackluster (.500 or a little better) and fans won't care as much. Football will be their fancy.

VCU might think about football, but i'd rather have a top notch b ball program. If I want football, I can go see what Hampton-Roads doesn't have, a National Championship winning football program at U of R.
Their new stadium, yet small, will be delux.

VCU I really think should start thinking about expanding to Siegel Center by 2-3 thousand seats. RVA will be without baseball for years to come. Hockey might comeback (to arresterfield), nascar sucks, so VCU basketball will be the only game in town. I see it getting bigger. U of R might do well in sports, but their attendance won't draw avg. city residents like VCU Basketball.

As far as Larry, well....um...VCU and CAA fans enjoy this season coming because after that Larry is off to the NBA. I could not be more proud of that guy. F ODU!

ODU football is already D1. It'll take at least 8-10 years before they go from the former D1AA to D1A (BCS) and they may never do it.

i am tired of all their ODU football hype. I understand they are excited about it, but there are some things that will be interesting to see if it sustains their fledging program. Next year they play 7 maybe 8 home games. Against D-II and non scolly D-IAA BFS or whatever. Will the enthusiasm still be there after 2 years of that? What if they are losing to the same?
If they dont have a winning season next year their coach gets a pass, but the 2nd year of almost 60% home game schedule does he get a pass at another losing season?
Everyone just assumes they are going to win. We'll see.

As far as the hype. There isn't hype. It is just reporting on Larry's summer. On Eric's draft. The smae things they would talk about. All the while Mr Softee is polishing his skills with the Finnish Nat Team? BRAHAHAHAHAH.

This is a pretty funny thread. I haven't been here (or the Zone) and saw this, I didn't visit the thread on the Zone because I figured it was just hot air as usual.

SPI-DA1, I don't mind the "Old Dumb" stuff, but if you feel like you just have to do it, please spell "University" correctly next time. It'll pack a little more punch.

JacksonWard31, I don't know if we'll ever become "football school" since we have yet to achieve a first down, but I agree the trend is to focus on one sport or the other. Hopefully we can focus on both in their proper place. Right now we are seeing increased donations to the sports program, and points are earned only when a donor contributes to the general sports fund, not earmarking their donations for one sport or another.

Major Ram, we open against two DII schools, then we play DIAA (it is really FCS, but DIAA is cleaner to use) schools for the next nine games of the schedule. I believe the schedule is all DIAA after that. The next year we are in CAA play, so the wins will be few and far between. As I said on AGS, most of us in the season ticket crowd are heavily invested in this both in dollars and in time (for me, it is a culmination of over two decades of work), so it is unlikely we will falter because of a few bad seasons to start with. The students and single ticket buyers are another story, though. We will have to see what happens from there. What I don't want is to enlarge Foreman Field only to have it stand half empty during games (look at the 60K Yale Bowl or next year when Ga State starts playing in the Georgia Dome). I'd rather grow the fan base then grow the venue. That is why neither one of us built a 20,000 seat basketball arena. We built to our base plus a few thousand more, and probably will expand when the time is right.

Sorry to throw cold water on your smack thread, fellas. I'll back off now.

Carry on.

JacksonWard31: How can you say that NASCAR sucks when it draws over 100,000 twice a year. Granted you may not like NASCAR but it is a major part of the sports scene in Richmond. It would be nice if Richmond had several other sports activities. Until that happens, however, VCU does play a role in Richmond sports.

MN-
ODU and football makes alot of sense with the lack of other colleges in the area and the demographics. W&M is too far away to draw fans from South Hampton roads, etc...my point was if ODU fans are tired of the hype over Sanders and Coach Smart, and the recruiting job done on short notice, then I too am sick of the hype over ODU football. I understand the excitement BUT it is anything but a done deal. Games where the opponent is going to be outmatched one way or the other is going to lose the less ardent fans.
The Richmond area is notorious for this. Your DI-AA opponents are primarily from a non -scholarship league and I dont believe they are eligible for the DI-AA Natl Championship. The only "legit" game in that regard is the VMI game at the close of the season. Again I understand this and I understand ODU stacking the first 2 seasons with home games. But I assume there will be payback. Maybe not. Lets see in 7 to 10 years. If you have been as invoilved as stated then you know this is true also.
The points are not to incite but to question things I hope VCU fans look at if they are interested in football at VCU. (I am not for the main demographics issue above and the expense).
Best of luck and I will be watching and it should be interesting. ODU has alot of positive demographics that should/could make this work.
