WTG Coach! 8-2 is a great start! Keep on getting on!!

Go Rams!
Beat Seahawks!!

What a great thread!

I think our 8-2 record proves that Coach Smart is much more than an "over hyped quote machine". The entire coaching staff has done a great job so far as well as the players. Makes it nice to be a Rams fan.

A great start--and we could easily have been 10-0. With all the jitters in summer and early fall, an 8-2 records settlers most of our unknowns. Thanks to all: team, coaches, and fans. Both William & Mary and the University of Richmond have great starts, but their game environment is nothing like the spectacular environment of the Siegel Center. Over 7,000 attendees with students off on holiday break. It couldn't get any better than this!

Congrats on the good start. I do suspect that many wise posters (of which I am not) will wait until tomorrow night to reply though...8-3 and 0-2 in conference will send up all kinds of red flags, while 9-2 and 1-1 means he's on the right path in conference. UNCW is going to be tough I think.

Even 8-3 would be better than we started last year, and darn good for a first year coach. I stand by what I said either way. He doesn't have to be undefeated his first year for me to appreciate the job that he is doing. UNCW will be tough, but they won't be the first tough team we have played. Hopefully we pick up a W.

If we do nothing else, I'd be happy being able to effectively shut down their perimeter shooting and defend the 3 like we're supposed to...force them inside & try and score in the paint...

Rams by 9...

I like the OOC wins too. My point is that the only value of an 8-1 OOC record on paper is to give us an at large chance. We need IN CONFERENCE wins to make that a reality. An 0-2 start in conference is a big hole to dig out for at-large hopes (with 16 CAA games remaining including contests against ODU and W&M) that's why I think tomorrow is a critical game for an assessment of coach Smart. He needs to rack up the CAA wins.

On the bench -

I am quite pleased with the in-game and half time adjustments that have been made. I think this coaching staff does more in-game adjusting than the previous administration and coach gets credit for that. Even the one possession in the last game where we went 1-3-1 with LS1 up top was a fail. But that showed ecu a new look and caught them off guard. Switched out of it next possession. There have also been numerous moves from zone to man-to-man. I like it. I also like the substitution patterns. I don't think there has been one time all year where I thought "why is he taking him out?" or "putting him in?"

Recruiting -

I am quite pleased with the new guys' show of potential even though they haven't got a lot of playing time. Also, the game recaps of next year's in coming class gives me reason for hope. Great high school play doesn't always translate to Div I ability, but it least it sounds like they have the raw material to build from.

Personality -

I like that the coach seems more personable to the fans than the previous coach.
I like that he maintained the continuity of the team - no transfers out, except Joey and he came back, when he came onboard.
I like that the staff hasn't picked up any technicals and that has transferred to the team not getting any. We had quite a few team "T's" last year. That was just giving away points.
I like that the players feel they can play "their" game with a little more freedom despite less playing time than they might have hoped for individually. This means I have to put up with LS1 taking those long fade aways and 3-pointers if I'm counting this as a plus.

I predict every game we play will be tough and trust our coaches, players and fans to help us win most of them if not all of them. We have a good team but the Colonial is full of other good teams that can beat each other on any night. Our team depth and how they continue to play is a big key to our success. Go Rams!

Congrats to Coach Smart - very impressive start - this is a long season and we have a major recruitment coming up next season - thats when this job will get really tough..

Coaches Mike(s) and Wade - congrats on your hard work in getting this team together.

I am impressed and satisfied with where we are.

Pros:
Record
Recruitment
Personality
Passion
Energy
Connects with the players

Cons:
Team in game flow (we have major swings and have yet to play a consistent start to finish solid game, except for maybe OU)
Road success (still not proven with no impressive road wins and one suspect loss @ Western Mich)

but overall Coach Smart and staff get 4 out of 5 stars, 8.5 out of 10 or a A-/B+

Let's at least try to get half way through the season before that one starts up.
