NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Drew Hareza kicked five field goals and Jamar Parham ran for two touchdowns Saturday as Old Dominion defeated Division II Chowan 36-21 in the Monarchs' first football game in 69 years.

Parham carried 13 times for 105 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 43 yards for the Football Championship Subdivision Monarchs, who will join the Colonial Athletic Association in 2011. ODU last fielded a football team in 1940.

C.J. Westler was 27-of-48 for 293 yards and one touchdown for Chowan (0-2). He also had a 1-yard touchdown run.

Hareza was 5-of-7 on field goal attempts, including a 48-yarder on the final play before halftime that was set up by a Devon Simmons interception on the previous play. Simmons also recovered a fumble.

Old Dominion's 6-foot-6 Edmon McClam blocked all three Chowan point-after attempts.

Hareza might want to think about suiting up over the winter as well, he was actually able to make the 3.

They will play Virginia Union on Saturday. All home games at the newly refurbished Forman Field are sold out.

If I didn't know better BigE, I'd think that you had a bit of a chubby for ODU football.

I was going to go down Saturday before I found out I had to work () - was going to get a tix from the VUU boosters. Until the Rams have a team, I am going to support the other schools in VA who do.

Would you mind supporting VUU over ODU though? Or VSU, WM, JMU, Hampton, you get the point. I did watch the first half of the game on TV. Crowd looked good. Team looked good, but it is hard to tell against Chowan, but so far so good I guess. I am not talking smack, but no matter how they do this year they could be in for a rude awakening when CAA play starts. Maybe they should play UVA instead as a confidence booster.

Consider me Jealous

ditto...

looks like a blast...and that stadium doesn't look half bad (other than the blue and white)

Fourthed!

Vetoed ... F ODU and football. Let's be honest, football only matters til the first week of November, then it's basketball season.

I would expect ODU to have sellouts this season....sort of like the hot new girlfriend you start going out with. But sooner or later she will start to nag and nancy...that's when things will change. :P
