I was just thinking about how bad of a post season record ODU has in basketball. 3-11 in NCAA tournament history. 8 one and done tournaments. Even before our 5 game run this year we wer at least 5-9 or 4 one and dones. Total count is 10-10. Mason has been a total of 6 times they are 5-6. Theyhave 4 one and dones. Proportionately we are better than ODU and Mason once we get into the tournament. if you add both the number of wins Mason and ODU have combined we still beat them by 2 wins. Why bring this up? Well just like many of you I hate ODU and I wanted to give them something to think about as I know they will be trolling our boards from time to time. Just some more salt to put in the wound. Let's face it ODU will always be the brides maid and never the bride.Once again ODU can never live up to the hype. They luckily escaped this year with the CAA tournament title and are no more than a paper tiger. Next year they fall back to mediocrity. Maybe they need a new coach...oh wait a minute that would go against the grain. A young energetic enthusiastic coach, that would not make sense would it? Gmu finally gets rid of the old fart coach L... yeah he did his job 5 years ago but 1 win in 5 years since does not say too much about his coaching skills. VCU has always been a better program than ODU, even when we were doing our thing in the funky little gym on Grace St. We have 9 regular season conference championships which include 4 in the Sunbelt to 6 for ODU which include 1 Sunbelt title. I have to be honest when I say I thought this year was ODU's best shot at making some noise in the tournament, but true to form they drop the ball and loose in the first round. Hey man we could have used that extra 1 point whatever million another game would have brought. But hats off to you ODU. Without you I would not have a doormat to wipe my feet on. A team to laugh at. At the end of the year I can always count on you guys if you are lucky to be One and Done University :ugeek: :ugeek: :ugeek:

"But but but, we have football."

They're going to be a bottom feeder team in the CAA.

Well in basketball they lose a lot 2. So they will have a tough task like us with their inside game. Kent needs to work on shooting if they are trying to have him carry them.

ODU has an excellent basketball program. Not too much difference in the 2 programs, if you are knowledgeable about the situation. But one thing is for sure- we have out-performed them for years, in terms of big games, and NCAA action. We've got them there.

Be careful, though, in what you post. ODU is going to be a WHOLE LOT better next year, than some people think. I'd pick them pre-season, to be somewhere between 2 and 6. If you really pinned me down on it, I guess I'd say maybe 4th. But I could see anywhere between 2 and 6. Don't forget how solid Chris Cooper ended up last year. He is a good one. We all know how good Baze' is, and then when you add the transfer (Hill, from Clemson i believe ?)..... into the mix, watch out. he is going to be a good one. Illiadis is no joke, and the wild-cards are Dmitri Batten and Josh Hicks. I thought Blaine should have had them in this year, rather than red-shirt / sit.... but I guess with Hicks, it was an academic situation, and you have to respect Blaine for that. But these guys are going to be good players. We'll just have to wait and see how quickly they can be ready for prime-time. Here's how I see their line-up:

P/G - Batten / Hicks / DeLancey
2/G - Hill / Iliadis / Hicks / Batten
S/F - Baze / Hill
P/F - Nick Wright / Not Sure
C - Chris Cooper / The Big Dutchman

* I know I am missing a couple of key pieces, but can't seem to remember them. but you better believe BT will have them competing, and they are going to be a lot better than some people want to think. Heck- Bazemore, Hill, and Cooper is the core nucleus of one he!! of a basketball team. They just need to get the Point Guard thing figured out. And I'm betting Batten will be ready to go. He just needs 10-12 games.

"Shoo-ting? What's that?"

Once upon a time when we were riding high beating Duke and making the NCAAs two out of three years I clowned ODU about playing in the CBI and CIT tournaments. Then suddenly we found ourselves playing in the CBI. Point is, be careful when you decide to kick dirt in somebody's face. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you.

Great post, even though it is fun to make fun of ODU we haven't set ourselves apart from the other top teams in our conference just yet. In the last 4 years VCU, GMU, and ODU have all won the CAA championship, been to the NCAA tourney and won, been to the NCAA tourney and lost, and played in the CBI/CIT. Yes we have made more noise in the NCAA tournament but we have to get back and do it again before they do.

You can dislike ODU all you want but they are a respectable program year in and year out and will always be a a highly competitive game for us. Most of their fans are decent people just like our fans. There will always be fans that take this game too serious and get ugly with each other with the name calling and degradation. I like Mistachill's post and agree that what you say could come back and bite you in the butt. Enjoy the game and live and let live positively.

As Rambo suggested, Old DoMINIMUM has a good basketball program. Unlike many of their moronic posters, knowledgeable VCU followers will accept that. Quality must be measured over time and both programs have enjoyed success.

That said, VCU has clearly been a better program over the long haul as well as recently. The empirical evidence clearly supports this. The national stature of VCU right now is in the stratosphere whereas the Monarch butterflies are just ambling along at their one-and-done pace. They criticize VCU for hiring the best young and dynamic coaches available(think Villa 7), but fail to admit Taylor has been trying to secure a West Coach job for a few years now-he just has not succeeded. Taylor is a good coach in my opinion. He is particulary adept at identifying kids flying under the radar. Probably not going to sign too many High-Major kids but has a knack for bringing in kids with upside, redshirting them and turning them into productive players. VCU does it differently. We sign aggressive, young, talented coaches that we identify via Villa 7 who have a lot of cache and are instant hits as recruiters. Although they may be on a bit of a learning curve when they are hired they have been quick learners and have great upside. Just a difference in philosophies. ODU mocked VCU when we hired Shaka but look what he has done. He was the winningest first year head coach in the country last year as a 33 year old, won a post season tournament, and now takes the Rams to the final four as a 34 year old. Taylor will keep the Monarchs competitive, but will likely never make a deep run in the tournament. It is what it is.

Look at some of the accomplishments of the Rams over time. Besides a sweet 16, elite 8, and final four, the Rams are 10-10 in the NCAA's. We finished the current season ranked 6th, finished the season in 1985 ranked 11th, have been ranked in the top 25 multiple times, were a #2 seed in the NCAA's in 1985, have been the winningest program in the state of Virginia over the last decade, have had two(2) first round draft picks the last two years - one a junior, will very possibly have yet another player drafted this year, have signed the second highest rated(consensus) recruit in the states history and lastly are simply one of the hottest basketball programs in the country by any measure.

The future is incredibly bright in Ramland. I never thought in my wildest dreams down here on Tobacco Road the Rams would be the talk of the town, but we are just that!

I don't really see the point in trashing ODU after we had an amazing and historic season. Can't we just let that do the talking for us?
