Pierria' Henry, who was expected to miss his senior football season at South Charleston after developing a blood clot in his leg, now looks like he'll give it a go.

SC basketball coach Vic Herbert said Wednesday that Henry will likely play football this season. Football practice begins Aug. 2, though Henry could be a limited participant.

I guess its great news as far as the healing process with his leg, though it does worry me a bit.

yea double edged sword here. good that he has recovered quickly enough but dont want to see him get hurt.

If the doctors are cool with it, I say more power to him.

You only live once. Make the most of it, young man.

I wouldn't like to see him reinjure his leg. But it is also good when a player has a chance to work out, play a sport, and get healthy before basketball season begins...especially with the injury.

Exactly...probably the last time he'll ever suit up for football with all his friends in games that actually mean somethin'

Good Luck

Ram Tough.

Exactly.

I gotta say, really love some of these guys Shaka has been bringing in. Smart guys with tons of heart and character. Good luck this fall Pierria'....you gotta come up with some sorta VCU celebration if you get into that end zone.

i dunno guys. i'm kind of worried about this kid playing football.

what if he does REALLY well and a big time program like odu comes in and swoops him up?

I'd worry more about his opponents. They're the ones in trouble.

actually that does worry me (not the Fodu part though)

hopefully he sticks to his commitments and doesnt punch any opponents in the face

I am amazed that you all don't see the real reason we recruited this guy. He's going to be our first two sport star - - VCU basketball and ....VCU FOOTBALL !!! Shaka is such a good recruiter that they asked him to start recruiting the football team as well.

After a spring and summer of uncertainty, Henry appears ready to rejoin SC's athletic teams.

A Class AAA first-team all-stater in basketball, Henry had to undergo emergency surgery April 19 in Pittsburgh to remove a blood clot from his right leg after suffering a pair of similar injuries during AAU basketball games.

Initially, his senior season of football was expected to be wiped out and his final year of varsity basketball with the Black Eagles was a wait-and-see situation. Henry said if he hadn't been able to get to surgery when he did, amputation or even death was possible.

But fortunately for Henry, his recovery has accelerated to the point where he could be cleared for competition this week.

"I go back to the doctor Tuesday,'' Henry said, "and he'll let me know if I'll be released or if I'll be fine or not. If he releases me, then I'll definitely be out there. My physical therapist is working me out and says I'm doing fine. I feel fine. I'm playing outside with my brother and everybody. It's going real good.''

Even though Henry has committed to the basketball program at Division I Virginia Commonwealth, he is still drawing interest from big-time football schools. A successful senior season in football could give him additional college options.

Chill, I was with you until the last paragraph. Someone tell the kid to just play ball here and then go to the NFL after college. JPR almost pulled it off.

The big question for Henry is this: Will he stick with the commitment he gave to Division I Virginia Commonwealth for basketball, or might a big season in football sway him toward other major college schools in that sport?

Henry isn't tipping his hand just yet.

"I always say football is my heart and basketball is my soul," he said. "I'll do whatever works out, whatever is best for me. I'd hate to have to pay the bills [for college]. I want to get my family off that struggle.

"Right now, we'll play the [football] season and go from there. In November, if [VCU's offer is] still the best for me, it'll still be there. But there may be more."

This is the first time I've seen a direct quote from Henry that raise some doubts.
