At a reception tonight for alumni, President Rao was asked about football at VCU. He sounds very favorable about college football. Budget cuts, he said, requires us to re-think our priorities for this year (2009-10) and probably for 2010-2011. He said he would have to conduct a major study. BUT he wants to hear from students and alumni about football at VCU. Now is the time to hit him with emails and snail mail. If we are to have football at VCU, there must be a groundswell of interest and be ready to reach deep into your pocketbooks. Remember: for the 50-60 football scholarships, there must be an equal number of scholarships for women athletics. Football is not a cheap program. At the Va Tech game Saturday, Boston College had four buses just to cary the team and equipment from the airport to the football field.

VCU also has an excellent web site that is worth checking often for happenings around the VCU community.

Sounds a lot like -

"I'm going to put together a blue-ribbon committee of alumni, faculty, students, and members of the sports community to study the feasability of bringing football to VCU."

and what about the problem of parking on campus?

"I'm going to put together a blue-ribbon committee of alumni, faculty, students, and members of the VCU police department to study the feasability of improving parking at VCU."

and what about the carbon foot-print of VCU. What are you going to do to limit emissions?

"I'm going to put together a blue-ribbon committee of alumni, faculty, students, and members of the Energy department to study the feasability of reducing carbon emissions at VCU."

Enonram: It's all in the eye of the beholder. In business, no executive would ever enter into a multi-million dollar project without careful study. His/her board of directors wouldn't allow it. It just isn't prudent. In higher education, you have several levels of folks looking at your decisions: The Board of Visitors, the faculty, the students, the parents, the legislators, and the taxpayer. Careful examination of all of the issues are important.

hey, somebody asked me what I thought about World peace and i said I was all in favor of it. A BRC will likely be formed to study football. Glass half empty/half full? At least Rao wants to go there.

I really believe that football will happen. But maybe not in my lifetime. :D

I am just happy that Mr. Rao is not saying OVER MY DEAD BODY!!! about football. As we were walking back to our car on saturday from UVA, I saw multiple RAF members walking also. The point is that there will be support for the program if it is put into action. Lets get the studies going and send out surveys or whatever else the administration needs to get the project off the ground.

I saw a couple myself....I parked in the University Hall lot where did you park?

I was even rocking my VCU hat

Monroe Park without trees, and owned by VCU would make a nice place for a Football Stadium and parking deck. No offense, because I feel bad for people down on their luck, but right now it's a place for bums to hang out on/near campus. The city doesn't give two poops about it.

I love Monroe park, but if you could fit a stadium in the middle with trees around the perimeter, I think it would be a great gameday location, nestled right in the middle of multiple dorms and the Landmark Theater.

Wouldn't mind seeing that lot to the left of Lowe's a stadium as well. Not sure what it's used for now, but it just looks run down. Tear down what's there and plop a stadium on that land...just a couple of blocks down from the Stu. (easier said than done, I know)

Football is inevitable at VCU...or at least that's what I was once told by someone who it's nice to hear it from.

Right now the President's concern is raising $50 million dollars for scholarships and graduate fellowships.

After hearing him speak yesterday, I felt like he hinted several times at the possibility of football being an essential key to improving alumni/donor relations. Even if Rao does not decide to pursue football at VCU, I am extremely confident in his ability to lead VCU to the next level academically. Needless to say, I was captivated.
