6'11 Junior forward Tony Woods was arrested this past Monday for abusing the mother of his 1 year-old child. He is alleged to have pushed and then kicked her. Upon examination in the hospital she was found to have a fractured spine. He is scheduled to go on trial Sept. 30th. It goes without saying that I hope that the mother and her child are okay and Woods is prosecuted to the full extent of the law should these charges be true.

According to court documents, the 20-year-old 6 foot, 11 inch center from Rome, Ga., was arrested and charged Monday with three crimes: assault while inflicting serious injury, assault on a female and assault while inflicting serious injuries with a minor present.

The junior, who played in all 31 of Wake's games last season, averaged just under 60 percent shooting during his first two seasons.

Wake was already in a bad spot as they lost 4 of their top 6 scorers and their top 4 rebounders to graduation and the draft last year. This really hurts the Demon Deacons as he was projected to start for a team that was already thin in the front court. He was the leading returning rebounder (3.2 rpg) this year and the 3rd leading scorer back (4.6 ppg). It looks like seldom used junior Ty Walker (avg'd 1.9 ppg and 1.4 rpg over 8 games last season) and true freshmen Melvin Tabb and Carson Desrosiers will split the 40 min of PT at that position.

While we still have to get by Winthrop and Wake needs to get by Hampton...this is no doubt an advantage to VCU should we have to face Wake on their home floor with a trip to Madison Square Garden on the line. We really should win this game considering what Wake is losing and what we are bringing back.

Agreed. Cruelty and criminality are not exclusive to the athletic. The only issue is if found guilty how will this person be treated? Will they be held accountable for their actions? Conversely if found innocent will they be treated according or will this issue, if not true, cause them unwarranted trouble in the future.

Fractured spine man that doesn't sound good.

As hard as it may be, I'm trying to withhold judgment until we hear his side of the story. But its difficult to do when you read "fractured spine." I just hope the truth is revealed and he's dealt with accordingly either way.

If you do the crime...you do the time. There is no excuse for that kind of behavior from anyone.

WFU is probably trying to figure out a way for Woods to earn credits for this great showing of manhood.

I don't know, ramathon...I always got the feeling that Wake Forest was one of those schools that generally did things right...
Higher then normal academic standards that they stuck to
Student Athletes actually going to class
No real stain of cheating or "working the system" in regards to recruiting and such
This may be a situation where they do the right thing and suspend him indefinately.

but it's also possible they keep him active until "all the evidence is weighed" or some such junk.

either way...a pretty despicable situation

Sad to hear. As human beings, we have an enormous capacity to harm other humans (and animals). Life is too short for this kind of behavior. My prayers go to all those involved. Perhaps justice will prevail.

Wake Forest center Tony Woods received just a suspended 60-day jail sentence and 100 hours of community service on Thursday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count of assault on a female. The three misdemeanors Woods was originally charged with carried a maximum prison sentence of 20 months.

The biggest remaining question regarding the Woods incident is how Wake Forest will discipline the 6-foot-11 junior. New coach Jeff Bzdelik suspended Woods indefinitely after he was arrested earlier this month, but now the Demon Deacons will have to settle on a permanent punishment.

That will be up to wake forest...he broke the law...he didn't break any NCAA rules so the NCAA has no jurisdiction over this type of situation. its strictly up to the university as to how they chose to handle it.

I can honestly see him back by ACC play...four games in I think it would be an embarrassment to the university
