So the only home VCU games I have seen are vs. ODU twice and on TV. Now, those games are usually huge games and the student section is filled from end to end.

My question is, in a home game against Towson or Ga St. etc...how full is your student section?

Check out xjohnx's and vcuramnation's photo galleries, too. There are usually some pretty good shots there of students in the background.

You don't know our students very well do you?

I understand why he asks. I got the same question from a middle-age ODU fan at Qdoba after the ODU game in Richmond. ODU's student attendance has been fairly poor this season for some reason. With the exception of Drexel (which was on Tuesday at 7 after a 2-game losing streak at Mason and JMU), we have had over 2000 students at every home game.

The fan was dumbfounded when I told him this level of student attendance is the norm and not the exception. Pretty impressive considering we're in 4th place and their in 1st place.

So begins the process of basketball becoming #2.

Well VCU has also had much more recent success, and with that come the bandwagon fans. Although it is refreshing to see that although we are having a bad season (by VCU standards) in conference, the student support has never waned. That is a credit to the AD in drawing students and keeping up interest in the program.

Well it's surprising not just because they're in first place, but they're also unbeaten at home. Everyone likes to see a winner, especially at home, and clearly they are.

Calling hard working people bandwagon fans isn't necessarily the case. Perhaps they are intelligent basketball fans that don't like it when VCU underachieves. Also, for families with kids, it isn't easy to always make game in the middle of the week. So assuming they are just bandwagon fans is wrong.

Sorry L72, the main reason the stands weren't as packed for the DU game was because we dropped two on the road the week before. That's just the nature of the beast, sure some had legit excuses, but most come and leave depending on success.

This thread is specifically about student attendance. Nice job trying to turn the thread around.

Pretty much why I asked.

Also, I have to be honest, as much as TTL PKG upsets me (mostly because I hate VCU not his antic so much) It seems like your band is a huge part of it.

Of course being so successful is a big thing. And in no way am I saying the band is a negative, the opposite actually. ODU's band is so, so, so boring. And I am sure they all sound musically fine. But it's like a mausoleum during warm ups while VCU is rocking 1/2 an hour before the game starts.

I love ODU don't get me wrong but look at the 2 best student fan bases...GMU and VCU. The 2 best bands in the conference. They have amps, loud guitars and great song selection. ODU tried playing Through The Fire and Flames and it sounds okay? But with all trumpets and flutes...it doesn't do anything.

We only get working for G'Town, VCU, and GMU. It's sickening to me...Maybe because we are a commuter school? Probably not as we are trying to move away from that. As much as I hate VCU, you guys probably have the best atmosphere in the CAA. And I think a lot of it has to do with just our band being so terrible and your band being that much better...really really annoying that ODU will not change it up.

I mean with our facilities and support we need to have a band that shows that. We have a bunch or collared shirts and then we have some paid older people (can't remember the word for them) and they don't even care about being there...just there for a paycheck. It really kills the momentum...between timeouts we hear the band play and the cheerleaders cheer...and it doesn't do anything for anybody. Frustrating.

You're right about the band. Richmond was so envious of them that they hired a bunch of our band members to play their games last year. ;)
