This isn't meant as a personal insult to the guy (Adam) that hosts it, I'm sure he's a swell guy but our pregame radio show sucks. It's basically ram propaganda that a 5 year old could critique.

--Impressed about our ability to bounce back after losses--referencing NC State and New Mexico

We played a bunch of buy games after those losses and in some of those weren't the most impressive.

--This game is to determine who the best team in Virginia is

UVA would like a word.

I'd like a bit more analysis and to be honest the show that Marcus Leary and Ben Rekosh do on student radio is much more insightful.

Where can you find this student radio show you speak of? never hear of it. I like that Adam at least has ram coverage throughout the week and is in my podcast feed for the ride home from work each day.

I’ve listened to it a couple of times. It’s a bit over the top and like a big helping of Rams Kool-aid. “Keys to victory” may as well be to score more points.

It is a student radio station. They have probably seen 1/1000 of the games you and I have seen. He says as he beats off the dog with his cane!

I’m taking about having listened to Awaad (or whatever his name is), not the student radio station. The Awawd guy is over the top biased, as a VCU paid promoter. Just don’t care to listen.

Awaad was the assistant producer for the "Sports Junkies" close to a decade here in Fairfax before 106.7 the DC fan moved to Rockville Md.

The junkies used to talk about his VCU fandom all the time.

Not at all arguing, but I'll take the flip side and say that I stream sports radio in the background at the office. Living in Roanoke, awash in Virginia Tech/UVA sports coverage, it's nice for me during the lunch break to sit down and listen, and actually hear some VCU sports conversation on the radio at all. He may be over the top and enthusiastic, but I've also heard him pissed off after losses too, so he's not pumping sunshine all the time. And he does get some interviews with players, Robbie, etc that have been interesting.

Agreed.

I personally like Adam aka A-Wadd.

Whether its VCU, Va Tech Football, or the Washington Commanders... hes passionate about them. And doesn't usually hold back, at least not on his radio show.

During the pregame shows hes essentially being paid to cover VCU Basketball exclusively.... I assume by VCU. And generally speaking, most employers don't want you harping on everything we've done wrong in previous games & all that. Plus fans would complain, if all you did was bring up the bad stuff. He mentions both. He also does his homework on the other teams... so thats it's not just pumping sunshine on VCU for 30 mins til Robbie & Rodney take over calling the game. you can only cram so much into a half hour or so while still having to throw in commercials.

As far as the WVCW Students covering the games.... My guess is, no ones telling them how to do their pregame coverage. They can go as detailed or as brief as they want. And as long as no one files a complaint about something they say while covering the games or pre-games.... they can pretty much run their show or pre-game show however they want.

When I was a student back in the late 2000's (after the Dagger, up until the Final 4 run), one of my friends & I had our own radio show at WVCW called Rowdy Radio.... and it expanded from the 2 of us covering all things sports, to eventually up to 4 of us off and on depending on the days & our school/work schedules. We interviewed players & coaches from different teams & such back then...... back before Student coverage at games became a regular thing.

And while the personnel at WVCW over all has changed annually (its basically student run after all)... I can tell you, when we were there, we basically had full control over everything we did.... and pretty much as long as we didn't offend someone or do anything illegal... we were fine.

Confirmed. I was the news director at WVCW for my final year at VCU (1993-94) and there was no oversight whatsoever. Also, no coaching, which was a bit disappointing. We were fully left to our own devices. My now wife/then girlfriend took over as news director after I graduated.

Fun fact: The guy who took over as news director after my wife recently took a job as the Senior Communications Director (or something like that) for the Robertson School. His office is the room that USED to be the WVCW studio in the Temple Building. I'm still ticked off that they booted the station out of the building. Made no sense.

yeah it can be a blessing or a curse just depending on students that are there at the time.

It's a curse because as you said, there's no oversight, no coaching... no one to truly help guide young students who may never have done anything from a Broadcast or written Journalism side of life before.

It's a blessing tho imo, because it gave us a small glimpse into what real life Journalism whether it be print or Broadcast is like... and how difficult but rewarding, establishing relationships in the community can be. And realizing you can't just go... "Hey Boss.... I wanna interview Coach so & so of the Men's Basketball team" and just have it given to you. You gotta work up through the proper channels & establish your respect & trust level.

In theory that seems like a good idea, except when the older students (who are in charge of the station) just aren't that good at broadcasting and/or teaching. From my observations, each broadcasting cohort had probably five or six students who actually had a future on air. The rest were more behind the scenes and/or would never actually work in broadcasting.
