Raising Joey to the rafters!

Should everyone from the Final Four run get honored? It gets tough when thinking about who to leave out

Congratulations to Joey. He played flawless basketball in that final four run.

That's nice .... but what about Ed Sherod's No. 25? Perhaps there is no one around VCU anymore who recalls Ed's brilliant play. He's easy to find, though, as the beloved coach at St. Catherine's, among the state's most prestigious schools. Give Ed a call. he'll be glad to hear from you.

I thought the only issue was that he did not graduate.

There was no graduation requirement, or even a whisper of it, when Ed was "the glue" of the team. On merely his VCU achievement, Ed meant more to VCU than Gerald Henderson.

It's understandable Ed didn't stick around to take more classes. He had a young family to support at that time and, shockingly, pursued a professional career that took him all the way to the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.

Seems there was no graduation requirement for being assistant men's coach at VCU, or head women's coach ... and no such requirement for being a long-standing faculty member at one of the most prestigious schools in Virginia.

So you set me up to get on your soapbox about requirements to hang a jersey.

Okay, Alien ... what's your opinion on first to wave in the rafters? Ed or Joey?
I have no say in it but I think guys like Sherod, Watson, Stinnie and Jones should be up there or at least in the conversation before some of these more current players although those more recent players are great. Run on sentence completed.

Ed was a super star for VCU, top five guard of all time.

2011 was wonderful .... but what's next, Jamie Skeen, Brandon Rozzell, Ed Nixon heading to the rafters ahead of Jesse Dark, Bernard Harris, Ren Watson, Rolando Lamb, Phil Stinnie?

That may be true... which if thats the case... it begs the question.... who was the AD or the committee at the time & why didnt they put him in?

Since this continues to be a discussion every time the jersey retirement discussion is brought up....

then Maybe some of us as a fanbase need to reach out to Ed to have a town hall meeting and maybe we need to come up with a concrete set of guidelines that we all or mostly all agree on (cause theres always gonna be at least a few that disagree)... so that everyone can clearly see what the requirements are in order to get their jersey hung or get in the HOF or w/e.

And then after we establish the guidelines.... requirements to get on the ballot, %of votes needed to get their jersey hung, % of votes needed to remain on the ballot, # of years eligible to be on the ballot... etc.

Then maybe form a real committee (if there's not one already outside of the AD & a few of his crew) and determine how long each member of the committee remains the ballot & then rotate members out accordingly. And also determine when/how often a vote for jersey hangings/HOF entrants are done. Are they done yearly, every other year, every 4 years.... etc.

There would also have to be some form of requirements for people to be eligible to be on the committee.... which could also be determined in the town hall meeting. And obviously we'd want fans from every era of VCU Basketball as possible on the committee.

Obviously that could mean little or nothing long term.... because if Ed were to jump ship... the next AD and/or school president could come in and wipe out everything we set up now..... but at least it would be a start to something.

Maybe this could work or maybe i'm just running my mouth for nothing (through text).... or its somewhere in the middle.

But I'd be all for getting a group of us all together to get this idea in the works or at least to go talk to Ed & see if its doable or at least get a clearer picture of what the requirements are..... and are they his requirements.... the presidents requirements.... or a hold over from a previous regime.

Someone smarter than me (incredibly) explained in private message .... this is a shameful "money grab" by VCU .... Johnny come lately 2011 fans will jump to the occasion with wallets opened .... not so with Ed, What a shame. Rodrigues isn't in top 10 of all-time Rams' guards.
