If users of this forum get warned for copying and posting published information from other sites without permission, why has it become acceptable for users of this forum to use photographs of other users without their consent for malicious purposes?

I spoke with an attorney friend of mine this evening who indicated the use of such photographs of others on such a forum, if disapproved and considered objectionable by the photographee, is a violation of the law and subject to suit.

Perhaps it should be remembered that a) this is a message forum for a sport; nothing here is life and death, and b) the reason why many users of message boards acquire and use handles is to allow them to voice opinion on matters without repercussion or judgement of others on a personal level. If preferred, we can erase all monikers and enforce users to use their first and last name as their user ID.

This should especially be considered by those who do not hold the above perspective, but perhaps should.

At the end of the day, this is basketball and we are all fans of the same school and program. How we define that "fandom" is unique to the individual; while some only believe in expressing the positives for a myriad of reasons, others also share ways in which what they conceive as weaknesses be strengthened.

There should be no place for some of the antics that occur on this message board; and perhaps if and when our school becomes big-time enough to sign on with Rivals we will see this change. For now, it is incumbent of each of us to maintain some sort of "house rules". I'd hope we'll see no more photos of other users posted without their permission, as well as the impersonation of others through bogus users names created by an admin from this site, which has also occurred in the past.

Lets keep this forum enjoyable to read; and whether a poster wishes to believe everything VCU does is always the very best in the world at all times or whether a poster believes there are a million areas for improvement, both should be able to express that opinion with that understanding that the goal is common; success for VCU.

I would suggest this go in the suggestions folder, since the house rules are set by the "house," which consists of the four guys who run this site for our enjoyment.

Point taken. However, it needs to be read by those on this forum who do not abide, such as the poster subject to potential suit, whom was specifically referenced. Most do not peruse the suggestions folder; I'm of the opinion that this needs to be seen

If you say so. As far as legality of photos published by the subject of the photograph in a public forum (ie facebook), I'll leave that to your lawyers to work out (and our in house law professors RamMobile/DickLawRam and artRam to commentate on).

Could you pm the alleged offending person and tell them yourself? If the pictures were taken from a public site with no copyright then while a bit tackly, I doubt it is a legal violation. Your attorney friend specializes in copyrights?

I agree I think a PM wouldve been sufficient as oppose to a new thread that Im sure is going to cause more fireworks.

Specifically, regarding this particular usage, the photograph(s) were not obtained from a public forum such as facebook.

As I mentioned, the legal counsel that I spoke with was very clear in reference to the specifics as they apply to this site. Just a heads up to others who may decide this is how they intend to get their kicks.

No need for this site to become anything other than a place for basketball discussions and disagreements.

Fair point; however, I thought it best to share with everyone before others follow suit and it gets further out hand to the point where there are repercussions.

Man up, if you are gonna be a coach you have to have thick skin. A PM would have been more appropriate than publicly outing yourself.

I totally disagree with you. Having a basketball opinion does not require disclosing personal information.

Just a suggestion, since there is a few people who disagree with each other so much that's it's gotten to this point, why don't you just put each other on ignore. Not trying to get involved, just trying to be helpful.

That picture is on your facebook is it not?

And the suggestion by Banana is a good one.

Yes I see why you would want to make such a point in a public way, a PM should have done it. A PM to the admin should have worked as well. I dont think that this practice would be widely used, as it is apparent that this is a personal feud between the alleged offender and the alleged victim. It should be handled off this board all together. For the record I agree with your reasoning, and I think its a douchebag thing to put someones pictures on the board (as long as they are not ODU idiots  ) I just think it could and should be settled elsewhere.

Someone thinks rather highly of them self if you think all of us want to put your picture in our sig line.
