It's fun to speculate who we will sign and a few names are off the boards. Who do you think we sign after all is said and done???

IMO - Anthony Lee (florida connection and I think the So Cal thing is for show)
& Melsahn Basabe (academics and hunger to play get him here)

Anthony Lee & Cady Lulane (Or Lalane seen many different spellings)

There has been a little action on the recruiting front over the past couple of days with a few of the guys we have been chasing off the board, a couple visiting this weekend, and a new name or two popping up. Even though we have threads on each individual recruit I thought it might be good to use this thread to narrow down the recruits that we are still after and who everyone things (either an educated guess or pure speculation) will end up signing. Anyone else willing to make a prediction before this weekend's visits are over? If Lee is out of the picture as reported the two guessers so far are wrong. Which is why I am not guessing.

Sometimes recruiting is just that. You just know in your heart if you want to go to VCU. Some do and some lose.

Sometimes its good to worry about your program (see Kentucky), but this is not the time to worry about our Rams.

We'll be fine, We always are.

At this point we only have one more scholly to give (TJ and Kirill are the only definite schollies up for next year, unless Larry makes he jump) correct?

If that is the case, I think we will definitely get Brandenburg... (keen insight on my part)

After that, I am feeling the Payne...

I presume we would not be able to line up another until Larry makes his decision in the spring, at which point we will likely end up landing an as-yet unknown to this board big...

Although I would love to see 2 new bigs in 2010, one would be doable with T and Skeen, and possibly addition of Hinton's minutes, but certainly not ideal.

Don't let numbers fool you. Scholarships are annual contracts, given and taken. It's harsh because these guys are still kids, I know.. but it's truth.

Acknowledging that scholarships are one-year deals, I still don't see anyone on the roster who we can bump off without looking really bad:

*Ed, Joey and Brandon will be seniors -- bad precedent to set, play for 3 years and then get dumped
* Brad, Rob, Jay and Jamie aren't going anywhere, obviously
* Issiah, Darius, Troy will be sophomores (redshirt freshmen?) and are Smart recruits -- he's not getting rid of them

It seems the only possibility is Terrance, and I don't think we're in any position to be washing our hands of a big, strong post player.

Other than that, I guess it would have to be one of the seniors since they're all Grant guys

AG - don't forget Myk Brown left right before the season began last year. Not that I think anybody is leaving but that would mean the juniors could still leave and retain two years of eligibilty, right?

Honestly I wouldnt support a decision to kick anybody off the team one year contract or not especially a senior. But Shaka will make room...he found a way to get Franck to transfer I guess because he thought he wasnt good enough. So he will make room( not that I think it is the right thing to do)

This obviously does happen...but I don't think you'll see that with our team. One thing that people may not know that possibly could signal that Larry might leave is the fact that he is on track to graduate this summer with a degree in Sociology. That may be that much more of an incentive for him to leave given he has will have his degree in hand after this year and obviously on the condition that he has a 1st round guarantee. The staff is likely recruiting with the mindset that Sanders will graduate and leave for the NBA after this year.

*ASIDE* Franck had also already graduated and was pursuing his master's degree this year if I remember correctly. Wil Fameni had gone the same route, finishing up his masters after playing here.

Basabe and Bradley

I concede I sometimes make light of all this recruiting talk (94-year-old Jack LaLane, and all that).

Here's why.

The best way to predict the future is to study the past.

From the late 60's until now, VCU has recruited somewhat better players than its primary opponents - that, despite the handicap of having a small fraction of the current attendance, area support, national reputation and TV coverage.

Speculate about This Guy and That Guy all you want, but there's nothing to worry about - promise.

If VCU could land three NBA draftees in 1970, when nobody west of the Robert E. Lee statue on Monument Avenue had even heard of the Rams, just imagine the potential now ...

Re DB Post (no need to quote the whole thing)

I didn't realize that Larry could still possibly graduate even if he entered the draft following this year. It looks like he has been working hard in the class room as well as on the court and in the weight room. That would make me feel a lot better about the situation if he were to leave following this year. It would make a great story for the school and Larry as well.

Have to believe that after letting Lee basically walk to Temple that there is something that is telling our staff we have a great shot at landing at least one of the bigs that are talked about on this board. The ones that pop to mind first are Bradley, Lulane and Basabe.

As far as the year to year scholarships, i dont think it would play out where Smart basically kicks someone out but more that it would play out as said earlier that lack of playing time and other similar things will show the writing on the wall of someone being phased out. Not that I want to see anyone in particular leave but seeing as how we have added another 2 and another 3 in recruiting to this point if a guard/wing based on the numbers game (probably one of would be rising seniors most likely) decided that for himself it was a better opportunity elsewhere then maybe we could add 2 of those bigs to McCarter and Rob and have a phenomenal recruiting class because i am working even more under the assumption Larry is leaving and we have 3 guaranteed scholarships to give for next year.

Really, the only true "big" we're still mentioned with is Bradley. Lulane is a 6-8 PF and Basabe is either 6-6 or 6-7, and signing either one of them does nothing to address the fact that if Larry leaves, we don't have a center capable of guarding the basket and blocking/altering shots in the paint after this season.

If we don't land Bradley, we're gonna have to get extremely lucky and hope to land a quality big in the spring.
