Because they are presumed red shirt players we haven't heard much about Reco or Heath. I am curious if anyone has insight into how they are dealing with the lack of PT - - whether they are on board and positive about the situation and maybe even still hoping to earn time this year?

If Toby is out for long, Reddic looks like he is ready to contribute, but we still don't have a lot of depth - - just Haley and Hinton.

Injuries are a key reason not to redshirt....I would love to see Reco or Heath start getting some playing time...someone had mentioned that Reco needed some weight and that Heath was still healing...

It might be public knowledge, but they aren't actually red shirted until they go the season without playing (as I understand it), that it why I referred to them as presumed redshirts (nothing's official) - - that status could change at any time. Seems like a 6-8, 240 guy could be helpful given that a 6-8 235 guy is now injured.

in their case development was the reason for the redshirt. odu does this as a matter of course up to 2 guys each year to learn more about the game, game speed, physical and mental preparation.
taking the redshirt off now would be a disservice to whomever you are taking it off of as they have missed 1/3 of the season and likely would not get enough PT to justify it. it happens but i don't think it would be a good idea right now. i personally do not know how long veal will be out. they do

IMO the player is very involved in the redshirt decision. after preseason and early season practices, it may not be too hard a sell to convince either player the advantages of redshirting a year. They will be alot better as 5th yr seniors. as well as get more playing time as stronger RS freshman

this IMO is a good thing

Some people are forgetting another great reason to redshirt some players. We brought in 5 players last year and by redshirting two of them we don't need to try to sign five guys to replace in four years. 3 is a more manageable number

While that is certainly something to consider, I will channel my inner Bighorn and point out that those things seem to work themselves out one way or another. Just look at the freshmen class that included Joey, Ed and Brandon to show you that what comes in together doesn't always finish up together. On top of that, we have 4 scholarships to fill that will potentialy join the class with the 2 that are redshirting now, of course pending a redshirt or 2 in the new guys next year...

While I don't know details on coaching/player decisions for Recco and Heath I really like the idea of developing kids, especially those that aren't 4 star type players that are highly likely to get significant freshman minutes.

Since coaches originally committed to redshirting Recco/Health, I hope we stay with it at this point--but ultimately they know best. I'd like DJ and Hinton to get more meaningfuly development minutes if possible...perhaps by going with three bigs more often, such as Skeen/Burgess/JR , with DJ/Hinton providing rotation. If someone needs a blow [or foul trouble], I'd like to see us then go three guards, or perhaps if we have a hot-hand guard.

Of course this is all speculative, which is really what redshirting is all about: speculating and investing in player/program development.

Isn't redshirting as a part of player development more of a need when as a program you seldom recruit 3 to 4 star recruits on a regular basis? I realize folks will say "Ram player X...they weren't a 3 or 4 star player", and I won't debate there are sleepers out there, or the rating system is flawed...but can we really expect to change coaches every 3-4 years and recruit mostly 2.5 level players and maintain excellence? Again, I like intentions/efforts with selective red shirting.

We often offer a lot of 3 to 4's, but 1) do we get them, and 2) do they typically contibute immediately or have the capability?

A 24 year old senior that will probably be getting an advanced degree. How horrible!
