So its no secret road games haven't been friendly to the Rams this year. In many case it was the Rams taking a big lead and then falling off in the second half. The exception was Drexel. When they went up against Hofstra though they never got a big lead because the Pride kept coming back. VCU was never in a position to become relaxed like in other road games. Another notable thing about the road games is except for Drexel the arenas VCU went to were quite empty. In places like Tulane there were about as many VCU fans as Tulane, maybe more. So what was keeping VCU from succeeding at road game?
-Being away from home court and being surrounded by Ram fans?
-Was it just mental?
-Taking a big lead and then losing composure when teams tried to fight back?
IMO I believe part of it was mental. This is a young team that doesn't revolve around one person to lead them in tough situations. There are at least 4 guys who step up individually different games to lead the team. Sometimes its Jrod, sometimes its Burgess, sometimes its Nixon, etc. I think the Hofstra team was the perfect team for VCU to get pumped for. Hofstra is a good team and its a long trip for the Rams. VCU played their game and controlled the tempo. What was better was when "havoc" ball bit the Rams because of Hofstra's quickness they adjusted which is something that we didn't see in cases such as WMU. VCU came into the Mack with a mentality of "must win" not a mentality of "we're not at home."
