This visit seemed to have gotten overlooked. Scheduled to visit campus on 8/29.

College coaches didn’t know how good he was or could be until he exploded onto the scene at the Adidas Take 5ive Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio.

His High School team runs the Princeton style offense so you don’t get to see much off the bounce, but you see the fluidity in the break when he runs the lanes like a thoroughbred.

He is blessed with the ability to blow by guys with a quick first step, he can create his own shot off the bounce and plays with a sudden burst and gear that most are not given at birth. He can keep you honest from 19 feet, but then hurt you if close out hard and gets to the rack and finishes above the rim in a half court set or transition.

Rob Brandenberg, 6-foot-2, 2010, SG, Gahanna (Lincoln HS), Ohio took a unofficial visit to Ohio University this weekend. His top five are VCU, Ohio University, Wright State , Akron and Marshall.

He a SG but he sounds like an interesting prospect.

Chill I agree, he sounds interesting. I am guessing that we are recruiting as if we will have three open spots next year, assuming that Larry takes the jump.

So we could wind up with

1. Rob Brandenberg (2 star but probably under rated and more like a 3 star)
2. Domantre Harris at 6'9" (4 star), or Anthony Lee at 6'10" (3 star), or Cady Lalanne 6'9" (3 star) at center
3. Reco McCarter at 6'7"(3 star) or Kadeem Green 6'8" (3 star) at SF/PF

I'm sure there are probably more recuits that I have not listed but these are the most interesting due to their high rankings and interest in us.

I say we put the families up in The Jefferson for the weekend on their visits and show them how nice VCU really is. If that is legal.

Playing time is usually a big selling point for kids..............

Wonder what our "sales pitch" is to perimeter kids when we've got eight non-senior perimeter kids on our roster in 2009-2010 (3 FR, 2 SO, 3 JR).

I wonder if Shaka is a "redshirt" guy. We'll find out I guess.

I've always found it interesting how VCU "campus visits" compare to other schools' campus visits when they can have a football game scheduled that weekend and we can't.............particularly when we're competing against a BCS school. Makes it a little tougher on the staff to impress the recruit..........hence, big-time kudos to Jeff and Anthony for landing the talent we've amassed over the years. They've certainly overcome some obstacles and found a few "under-the-radar" guys.

I was thinking the same thing recently after reading the Damontre Harris visit thread. Wake Forest may not be a giant football school, but you can't deny that a recruit would be impressed with seeing 10,000+ people rooting for the home school, tailgating, partying, school colors on everyone and everywhere...if we're gonna get one of these top echelon recruits...it's gonna have to be based on PT and National Exposure.

We're at a very delicate time here at VCU. We have to capitalize on the Maynor/Sanders cache value this year or next. Memories are short, and the Duke win can't be interesting to a kid who was 12 or 13 at the time. One of the main reasons Gonzaga and Xavier rose into powers was the recruiting post-tourney. No one on our current roster (other then Larry) screams "NBA!!!"...so hopefully we're headed the Zag/Muskateer way instead of Santa Clara and Valparaiso

Plenty of room down low for three bigs I think. With LS likely off the board and the "wrecking ball" and TJG departing next year it's pretty wide open. Skeen will obviously be a staple but the other guys left with any appreciable size in the 4/5 spots next year will be Hinton and Saintil. Talented freshman PFs with size could certainly compete with these upperclassman for a starting spot next year, or would at the very least see a LOT of time in off the bench. We will certainly be able to show them a deep talented group of guards for them to associate themselves with. Hopefully some of those recruits are wanna be "havoc wreakers"!!

I like the Jefferson. It would seem like a logical place to put the families up, within walking distance of the campus. I'm sure the recruiting department is all over that with as much special attention as is legal to provide.

I'd go from 6 to midnight if we got that class

While I agree that football definitely helps if you have a successful and well supported team (ODU should really be able to capitalize on football this season), there are other things that contribute to campus life and atmosphere. For example, if you're a typical recruit and they bring you on campus the weekend of Sept. 19th and you're taken to the fall step show at the Siegel Center that may have a bigger impact than a football game would.

There are probably other similar activities that give a good impression of a vibrant social life in spite of not having football.

That sounds very realistic.

I'm not buying the whole "football helps basketball" theory. I cite JMU and Delaware as two obviously successful football programs with little basketball success. I understand how it could help, but I don't believe it's worth it to start football just to see if it's true in VCU's case.

Make a great basketball program, and know that the recruits are coming for the right reasons. I agree that PT and national exposure are two of many of the right reasons.

I like football, but agree that it is not for everyone. If I were being recruited I would like the attention of being one of the biggest, most popular student athletes at a school of 32,000+ students. Basketball is the face of VCU athletics, even though we have some really good sports teams like women's field hockey and soccer, mens and womens tennis and baseball to mention a few.

So if I am a recruit I would be sold on the fact that I could play basketball on a high level with many televised games, play in post season tourneys, get to play my freshman year, be the face of VCU athletics and get drafted in the first round of the NBA. What more could you ask for?

My bet is Harris commits to South Carolina. They have been after him the longest and they appear to be the front runners for him.

I didn't mean to imply that we needed football (don't need another one of those threads for a while)...I simply wondered aloud what would be our "It" thing to really get a young kids attention. I should have also qualified my statement by saying "D-1 Football can be an impressive attention getting recruiting tool."

I LOVED my time in Richmond....it's the kind of city that grows on you when you find all the interesting nooks and crannies of clubs/restaurants/museums/live shows/historical junk/general Vibe of the city...etc.

But when you have a single day to actually show a recruit where you'd like them to spend the next 4 or 5 years...it's a challenge.

sorry to Threadjack

ANY combination of these players would be HUGE for the program

What happened to Ty Armstrong as a recruit?

Armstrong was listed in the wrong class. Everyone had him as a 2010 recruit but he was academically qualified for 2009. the coaches were made aware of it in early april. Not sure if we were able to get in or not as the previous coaching staff had been recruting him. The coaching change and the timing of it probably hurt us with this kid i speculate. right around the time that Grant left is when it was discovered that armstrong was actually a sr. and not a jr.

Just wanted to bump this to the top and remind folks to show Rob some love if you see him on campus this weekend.
