Just curious how many Rowdy Rams were signed up.

Also, how often do you all meet, discuss what you're going to do... basically how do you guys organize? I think maybe we could work something into the sight to help you guys out a bit if you're interested.

We haven't done sign ups yet. That happens at the beginning of the next semester. So early Fall will be the next sign up.

Before this becomes a Rowdy bash fest (I seem to recall we had a similar thread that ended this way on the Zone), let's try and keep this positive. The Rowdies are probably some of the most die-hard fans of VCU basketball that we have. That said, they haven't been as organized as they have been in the past. How do we improve this? What steps can we take to make the Rowdies better and attract other students to the group? :)

1. Join the Facebook Group- Any updates or messages are sent first to the facebook group

2. Representation- It is no longer recognized by the university though its still awknowledged if that makes any senses. Some work needs to be made there.

3. Planning- Unfortunately the last few years planning has been in the last few days before the game. I think this year its a matter of getting a earlier start.

4. Dedication- Not just wearing the shirt but representing the words and Ram logo on it.(By words I don't mean the Bookstore advertisement  )

5. More communication between Athletics and Rowdy Rams. They share ideas but if there's a actual connection between the two good things could happen. (Example SRAF- Many ideas from SRAF came from a Rowdie who pass them along to Athletics)

involvement

Have the "leaders" actually stand in the middle of the student section, instead of rushing to get the front row seats...which they're entitled to but it does not help with unity and people's impressions/motivation to get involved

organization

actually put fliers up around campus before games(in the commons and shafer) stressing the need to cheer/stand/be involved/wear black and gold

send out emails before each game....tell people to get there early...inform them about the opponent...cheer suggestions(and not stupid poop....basic stuff like yell during free throws/wave arms/let's go ra-ms(why is this drawn out again?)...the defense chant...hey song.....

It's as easy as being organized...they key it to make people feel like they are part of the group, not alienated, which I think was the case last year

Is there a President of the group? Some sort of leader heading things up.

And also how do you guys recruit new members?

There is a reason the Rowdies always get ragged on. The rowdies can become more enjoyable to be around and then they will probably attract more student members.

you mean you don't like their blue collar pretentiousness?

I guess to be completely honest, they just act like a bunch of geeks for the most part. They don't look like they fit in normal society at all. I can't imagine actually having a mature conversation with the ones that I see at the games. I don't want to offend anyone, it just seems like they have their own cliquey kind of group that usually consists of really immature people. I doubt most students want to be associated with people like that. I think the main thing is that people equate the rowdies with a weird kind of demographic. Plus the fact that they aren't officially recognized by the University and I don't think you'll see people lining up to join that kind of a group.

I mean look at the Cameron Crazies, they are very organized and have a great impact on the game. If you advertised the Rowdies as trying to be something like them with chant sheets and similar spirit stuff, I think you would be more well-received. Right now it looks like a bunch of no-doubt dedicated fans, but that's about it. I'm sure the students can do it. I seem to recall people saying they would be fine with doing this kind of stuff once the offseason started, but I don't see anything being done. Maybe someone should start up something substantive through the facebook group or something like that. Hope that helps!

this made me laugh...

...which is hard to do with a Labor Law and and Crim Pro exam today.

Its a tough thing to do Ramnation. As part of the group that started the rowdy rams almost 5 years ago now I think.

We had an executive board, with leadership and the whole 9. We were recognized as an official student organization and received funding from the University, for bus trips, props, and t-shirts.

They need to re-organize, have a plan, a leadership, not one guy, regular planning meetings. It needs to be run and managed like a fraternity, or club, or team. It takes time and effort.

I know the guys who are involved over the past few years have been trying and have had their bumps, just gotta keep plugging. I know I am not in town anymore, but would be more than willing to find some time over the summer (love being a teacher) to help sit down with some of the leadership and help brainstorm some improvements for structure and organization.

The potential is still there, just a little more elbow grease, and it can come together.

As much as I have been raised to hate Duke since as long as I can remember, the Cameron Crazies are THE most creative student group in college basketball. When Williams took over at UNC and everyone was dressed like Wizard of Oz characters was brilliant.

There is definitely a huge rift between the small group of diehard Rowdy Rams and the general student population who comes to basketball games. That is the main problem. I agree with ramnation that

Either Let SRAF take over and get things better organized, or start from scratch in fixing the Rowdy Rams.

This small group of "cliquey people" as you call them is who is doing the leg work. If their is a problem, or you want it done differently then come do your own leg work, or help out with theirs!

What does SRAF do? SRAF is the run by the administration right? This is them trying to squeeze out rowdy rams? What makes you think SRAF can do it right?
