PrepsHoopsAssist.com did their Top 25 mid-major/non-BCS recruiting classes for 2010 and VCU's 5 man class made the list at #5 in the nation. The teams in front of VCU were Memphis (top 3 national class), Central Michigan, Detroit (both with top 50 recruits pledging to play for their fathers), and St. Joes. VCU's class was ranked ahead of schools such as Xavier, Dayton, Butler, St. Louis, Western Kentucky, and Florida International (who has been recruiting well under Isiah Thomas). They are the sole CAA team represented in the top 25.

Shaka Smart and the VCU staff are continuing to gain accolades for the 2010 class, let's hope they perform well on the court as well!

Some good schools on that list...the A10 alone has 5 in their top 25.

Butler's class seemed a bit underwhelming...perhaps they won't reap the benefit of being in the National Championship until the 2011 recruiting cycle.

Thanks for the heads up DB

If this translates to the court, I think we're witnessing the turning point of us becoming a really, really good program.

I think we have already passed that turning point. That is why we can get this type of class. The turning point was when Jeff Capel III was hired. JC III brought in Nick, BA, Shu, Will famini, Troy Godwin, Jesse Pella Rosa, and took us to the NCAA beating a very good Mason team enroute. That is when the corner was turned.

AG added to the momentum with his class of Larry, Ed, Brandon, Joey, Kearse, and the kid who transferred. Then followed up with Burgess, Skeen.

Shaka proceeded with Daniels, and Theus, faltered a bit in the CAA and then won a CBIT beating a couple of A-10 teams along the way.

We are not back, but we have long sense turned the corner.

The turning point was when Dom Jones decided to stay close to home.

agreed...he had offers from a couple BCS schools and chose to stay home and the rest is history

This really helps our program look good. It proves that quality atheletes want to come here. VCU is a great school. :ugeek: :ugeek: :ugeek:

It's always nice to hear stuff like this! Hopefully the coaches can keep this up! Pierria is a great start to the 2011 class and although Kasey de-committed we're still in pretty good shape. You have to think the NBA buzz around Eric and Larry has to be helping us get in the door with higher level recruits schools at our level don't typically get in with. I'm already really excited to see what Juvonte Reddic and Reco McCarter bring...they look like they bring another level of athleticism that we haven't seen here in awhile!

Actually Dom stayed because Daugherty decided to go to UNC. If Daugherty had stayed Dom would have gone to Notre Dame.

I think Dom was important but his signing wasnt what signaled our change is status, it was his play, especially in the NCAA agains Chris Paul, under the guidance of JCIII.

If we keep McCarthy and don't hire Capel even with Dom I do not think we are in the same place.

You're talking about Doherty right? Matt Doherty? Just trying to make sure we're on the same page.

I didn't know he could have gone to Notre Dame. I'm certainly glad he didn't end up there.

Interesting tidbit that I read somewhere from Jim Larrannaga. Apparently Dom Jones had called Mason and told them that he was ready to commit there and the next day decided to visit VCU and ultimately decided to commit to us. It turned out nicely for us as Dom was the 2004 CAA player of the year. That 2004 NCAA tourney with the 1-point loss to Wake and Chris Paul is what really got the momentum rolling and VCU has been building on it with Capel, Grant, and now Smart.
