Norwood Teague, VCU's athletic director, said VCU has had conversations with the city about the stadium and land around it.

"It's just too good of a piece of athletic land with unbelievable proximity to the VCU campus for us to let it go," Teague said.

VCU interest in the stadium and property does not mean the Rams will be launching a football program, Teague said. But he did not discount the possibility of that some day.

This just screams VCU football. Must be coming in just a few short years.

I wonder if there's room to add a track around the field? That could make it a multi use field with Outdoor track, soccer, and yes FOOTBALL!!!!! That would not be a bad deal at all! :P

Sweet! This is exciting b/c as much as Norwood denies that this move is not about football there is no other thing that this could logically be about. We have a wonderful facility in SportsBackers that serves track and field and soccer. All the needs of the field sports are met w/ SportsBackers. Soccer and track and field do not need a venue that seats 21,000. This is a football move. It may be a ways off but it's closer today than it has ever been.

I can dig it, I have never been to City Stadium but I can imagine it will take more than a can of paint to get it shiny. But its a stadium somewhat close.

I say get it, do some upgrades on the joint and point me in the direction of where I send my check and then the direction of where I can drink brews in the tailgate lot.

There is a track or a road around the football field. If VCU did get the stadium, it will need significant upgrades (ie 10s of millions of dollars) to get it up par for football. Or we could just level the place and put in a multi athletic facility for track, tennis, soccer, baseball, softball, etc. I know the school is looking at other properties or will continue to use city property like the diamond and sportsbacker stadium, but the city stadium land could provide a consolidated complex to service our current athletic programs.

This is definitely a football move and I am very excited. VCU is too big to not support a football team. I feel City stadium though should only be a temporary site for football because it is located in a bad location for visibility and is somewhat hard to get to. I still feel the boulevard site is the perfect place for a VCU football stadium. It would cost a significant amount to start up but would instantly make VCU a big time program. As long as we stay at city stadium we will be a small program.

Negatives: Too far from school, hard to get to

Positives: It is stumbling distance from my house :D

its right beside the Downtown Expressway
for us Chesterfield folks take Chippenham North to DTE and you are there.

Yeah it's literally at the fork where I-195 breaks from the Downtown Expressway. It's virtually just south of Carytown which is all of two miles maybe from campus. This is a step in the right direction. This site would work for us.

City Stadium is old old old. Built in 1929, it seats about 22,000 people. I would think VCU would have to spend a fair amount to fix it up, if the City would sell the stadium to them, which they never seemed to offer to do for UR. Looks like you could probably fit a track if you wanted to.

I wonder why VCU has never looked at the property on West Broad Street next to Lowe's? Does VCU own some of this property? This property is between N. Allen and N. Meadow/ Hermitage Road, and it would give VCU an athletic facility that would already have two parking decks on W. Broad Street currenty used for basketball, and two more parking decks that are being built on Grace Street. It would also give VCU another on campus athletic facility. A satellite view gives a great view of the property. The old Sears property next to Lowe's has been vacant for over thirty years, and has a relative inexpensive assessment value. The rest of the property in this area has a low assessment value, except Lowe's, and there is alot of vacant land available. .

That's an old Sears building if I'm not mistaken. The site is ripe for redevelopment a football stadium is not fitting there.

Besides that, Trani's retired. VCU's out of the expansion business.
