Pretty cool that Mooney thinks we are the biggest non-conference opponent on their schedule considering they've played Missouri, Miss. St, and ODU
. They also play South Carolina and Florida after us.
The next opportunity comes Saturday at VCU (5-2, 4-0 at home). UR coach Chris Mooney recognized VCU as "our biggest non-conference game." Richmond then plays at South Carolina (6-2) Wednesday and against 10th-ranked Florida (8-0) in Sunrise, Fla., next Saturday.
"The next three are all postseason-caliber teams," Mooney said. "The next one is the most important one because of who it is. But if we can come out and hold our own and do well over these next three, then we'll know how good we are."
Offense has been bugaboo against VCU
UR's defense usually has held up during a five-game losing streak to VCU. The Spiders will attempt to exhibit improved offense at the Siegel Center Saturday at 7:30.
UR lost 77-76 to VCU last season. Before that, Richmond didn't score more than 54 in four straight defeats to the Rams. Eliminate a 103-59 win over pace-pushing VMI, and Richmond averages 66 points.
"I don't think Dan has played great yet," said Mooney of center Dan Geriot (8.4 ppg, 38.7 field-goal percentage), who missed last season with a knee injury. "I think [forward Justin Harper] has been a little bit up and down. There's room for our depth to show even more. I don't think we've shot as well as we should so far."
The Spiders will have had a 10-day break between games when they play at VCU. UR began the season with eight games in 20 days.
"I think the rest is very important for us. We have played a lot of games and being a veteran team, I think we've handled it," Mooney said. "But everybody needs a little bit of a break. You couldn't keep that kind of a pace up."
