In 11 games, the Rams have had six different leading scorers. Eight players have scored in double figures during a game, and eight are averaging at least 7.2 points.

"We've got a lot of guys who can play," Smart said. "The good thing to me is when you do put subs in the game, the energy level doesn't dip."

VCU requires fresh energy because of its pressing, up-and-down-the-floor style. Only one starter, junior point guard Joey Rodriguez, is averaging more than 30 minutes.

Smart said he determines his rotation by how guys play in practice and in games.

"Keeping guys happy is always a challenge," he said. "The reality is, everybody wants to play more than they're playing. You want guys like that.

"It hasn't been a problem for me. Now I'm not going to sit here and say there haven't been guys who want to play more."

"Their style of play is different than anybody we've seen so far," Smart said. "We're going to have to quickly acclimate ourselves to that style of play. Fortunately, all of our returning guys have a pretty decent feel for Northeastern. And our guys have pretty fresh in their minds the game against Northeastern last year."

What is so different about their style of play? Thinking back to last year, they seemed like a plodding, physical, half-court type team as I recall.

DB's preview thread talks a bit about their offensive scheme, especially the reply from Redsoxn2004 which discusses their utilization of the flex offense.

I guess flex makes them different since hardly anyone (in college) runs it anymore. It's a very old school, popular offense. We ran flex in Jr. high and high school. Our guys are going to have to play D in the lane by working off picks and switching. That said, Sanders, Skeen and T are all very mobile inside and I suspect we will match up well on D.
