"I would much rather be in a position where we have pretty much all of our perimeter guys back and some young, big guys who may have to step in and help us," Smart said, "as opposed to having everyone back in the frontcourt and having to depend on freshmen guards."

Smart called the freshmen a "very, very promising group." They have had good moments in workouts, he said, and moments when they struggled.

"The first thing the new guys have to understand is that each person is running his own race," Smart said. "You have to be careful about comparing yourself to other guys in your class or even guys in other classes because each guy's situation is unique.

"We wouldn't have recruited these guys if we didn't think they had a chance to ultimately be very good players in our program, but it takes certain guys longer than others. The thing about recruiting is you don't always know how long it's going to take."

Reading what Coach Smart has to say makes me realize our coach is as cerebral as anyone in the business. We watched him mature as a coach last year. Not only should we see great improvement in certain players from last year, but i think the expectations are high for Shaka Smart as well.

Reading the quotes I was thinking about how it applied to Coach himself and as much as some of us didnt want to play the postseason tournament I think it was a place where Coach had it click in even more for himself and he is ready for another level this year.

With a year of head coaching under his belt, comfort with the fans, city, and univeristy, post season success, familiarity with the CAA, recruiting success, and earned respect of the current players I think we are poised to see some really good things from Coach Smart this year. First year jitters are gone...I think he takes real ownership of the VCU program this year and we really get a taste of what he is capable of.
