RTD: VCU Notes

Teague said VCU is interested in acquiring 8.88 acres along Interstate 95 for a tennis complex.

The site, just north of downtown, is at 1405-07 Cummings Drive. It formerly was a facility for Wyeth Consumer Healthcare.

"We are waiting for the appraisal of the property . . . and then to negotiate from there," Teague said.

The Rams have sought for several years to build a tennis complex. Their tennis teams use the Thalhimer Tennis Center, an on-campus facility with six courts and a bubble structure for winter use.

Teague said the school is looking to build 6-8 indoor courts and 12 or more outdoor courts. The money to purchase the property and build the complex would come from private funds, he said....

Tennis facility is being paid for by private funds,...

guess VRam came up with the $$$. ;)

Great news. However, I am surprised that Norwood announced the plans before negotiations are finished. Usually these things are kept hushed until a contract is signed or until both sides have entered into an agreement. Does anyone know if the 8.8 acres include the building or just part of the land? Tear down the building and position the tennis complex in the right position and you've got a nice marketing piece as you drive east on I-95/I-64. We keep doing great things at VCU!!!

Richmond has a great potential to be an A-Class tennis city. We are missing facilities. Prioritizing this tennis complex will definitely serve to increase our exposure - well beyond the CAA. Especially the size he's talking (oh man, and throw in some court variety [clay courts, etc.] and it could be ABSOLUTELY top-notch).

When Byrd Park's public courts are one of the more sought-after non-country club facilities to hold tennis events, and as many as there are in this city (given the # of affluent residents in the area), we would be completely booked before even opening........WITH AMPLE room for our team to practice.

I HATE that ODU built their facility before we did, especially when (I thought) we had it in the works for much longer (given the caliber of our teams at the time). It's served their program and community very well (it's a very nice place to play).

(<--Wishing we had better direction on this all along)
