"We are certainly interested in keeping it an athletic property," VCU Athletic Director Norwood T. Teague said Wednesday. That option would "make the neighborhood happy and be a good use" for the stadium, he said.

Teague met with Mayor Dwight C. Jones last week to reiterate VCU's interest in the property. "We stated what we've always stated, that we're interested in City Stadium," Teague said. "We're interested in exploring options and taking it over."

Teague said VCU has no immediate plan to establish a football team. "If, if, if we ever do football," he said, that would require a long-term study. "If we ever do football, we want to do it right."

VCU is seeking a long-term lease or purchase of the city-owned stadium, or even to receive it as "a gift," he said.

"We're in discussion with a variety of people about assuming control of it," Teague said. "It's not gone any further than that."

If the school decides to start a Division I-AA football program, he said, "City Stadium is going to be a logical place to do it. But we're not even studying football yet."

Teague said in a recent interview that the university needs to be "cognizant of the current financial climate and some of our tuition issues" before launching a study on football.
