VCU coach Shaka Smart said playing in Lawrence Joel for the first time and Winthrop's physical defense probably were factors in the first-half misfires.

"One thing about the way we play, we let our guys shoot when they're open," Smart said. "They rewarded us by knocking down seven out of 10 in the second half."

Rodriguez, despite a broken arch on the bottom of his shoe, had 10 of his 15 points in the second half and added eight assists. Bradford Burgess, who suffered a bloody lip that required stitches in the second half, finished with 12 points.

"Their coaches made a statement in the paper . . . about how we weren't a good halfcourt defensive team," Rozzell said. "I think it motivated us going into the game to prove to ourselves and our coaching staff as well as to the other teams we face that we can do it."
