RTD: VCU’s Trani helped transform school, city and lives

interesting response from one of the ole guard countercultural grads who long for the good ole days.

Seriously, a lot of these people are ridiculous. People clamored when we tore down the livery stables? Those things were a piece of crap! No one who was clamoring for it to be saved gave a darn enough to maintain it. It was crumbling. Meanwhile, VCU wants to tear down a dilapidated building and replace with a sparkling, brand new athletics and recreation facility. VCU is the single thing that has kept downtown Richmond from being a complete ****hole. These people need to realize that. We ARE Richmond's downtown economy at this point. Except for Phillip Morris, I believe we are the largest employer in the city of Richmond. That's saying a lot.

Actually we only tore down one of the livery stables, the other is still there. The way these Oregon Hill folks talk you would think Jesus was laying in a manger in these things. They had no architectural or aesthetic significance.

The main thing is that Dr. Trani kept his word that there would be no encroachment into Oregon Hill. The new rec center is being built on property already owned and used by the University. My personal feeling is that these nattering nabobs of negativity should bend over and kiss Gene Trani's a$$.

Seconded.

I just hope residents around Oregon Hill don't take our recent purchase of Hollywood Cemetery badly. Thing is I keep hearing Pepsi wants to sponsor a stadium near Oregon Hill. A football stadium. I heard they were encouraging VCU to purchase areas around Oregon Hill. Just to set for the record the stadium would not be near the cemetery. Oregon Hill isn't going to take kindly to VCU getting that close if its true.
