For four years, the Rams were Eric Maynor's team. Larry Sanders was a nice complementary player for most of that time.
Sanders emerged as the star of this season's VCU squad, but his team went to the CBI championship instead of contending in the Big Dance, which hurt his visibility again.
Sanders hasn't declared for the NBA draft yet, but Fran Fraschilla thinks he should.
"Once an unknown, Sanders has worked hard to put himself on the radar of NBA teams because of a combination of NBA traits like excellent athleticism, quickness and length, a big ceiling for improvement and a solid basketball IQ -- especially considering that he arrived at VCU with little experience," Fraschilla writes. "At this point, comparisons to Theo Ratliff (at least the version that was drafted out of Wyoming 14 years ago) are fair, but to think Sanders will have the same career is asking an awful lot. A team in the second half of the first round will be willing to roll the dice and take that chance, though."
If Sanders stays, he can help coach Shaka Smart build on the CBI championship and hopefully get back on the big stage. If he goes, he'll be taking his chances. The major X factor here is the expected NBA lockout, which has pushed many underclassmen out the door for fear that they'll have fewer options if they stick around another year.
