SANDERS NAMED CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
RICHMOND, Va. – In this day and age of DVRs, one could look at Larry Sanders’ (Fort Pierce, Fla.) like a sitcom in super fast-forward mode.
Six years ago, he was walking the halls of Port St. Lucie High School as a lanky sophomore with a strong interest in art and a small, but growing interest in basketball. Now Sanders finds himself at the center of the Virginia Commonwealth University basketball program.
The praise surrounding the 6-11 forward continues to grow and he gained even more attention after averaging 22 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in VCU’s two wins this past week in televised contests. Those numbers earned the junior his second Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week honor of the 2009-10 campaign.
“Larry’s approach was phenomenal this week,†Head Coach Shaka Smart said. “When he brings that approach to a game, we’re a different team. We are extremely tough to beat when he plays like he did.â€
In front of a regional television audience, Sanders dominated Drexel with 29 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots in the Black & Gold’s 73-54 victory over the Dragons. Even more impressive was the fact that he only missed two shots, going 13-of-15 from the field.
Saturday’s ESPNU BracketBusters match-up was no different. Although foul trouble limited him to just 20 minutes, he got his money’s worth, going 7-of-9 from the field and finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
On the year, Sanders leads the team in scoring (15.4 ppg), rebounding (9.1 rpg), blocked shots (2.6 bpg) and field goal percentage (56.3%). He is the only player in the CAA to rank in the top-five in each of those categories.
Sanders and his teammates look for revenge as they host the Dukes of James Madison on Wednesday night in a 7:30 p.m. showdown at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
