Larry Sanders represented VCU as a 1st team all-state selection by the VASID (Virginia Sports Information Directors Association) for 2010 while Joey Rodriguez garnered honorable mention honors. Other CAA notables were Tony Shaver who was named Coach of the Year, fellow first-teamer Gerald Lee (ODU), Denzel Bowles (JMU) and David Schneider (W&M) both earned 2nd-team all-state spots while Quinn McDowell joined JRod as an honorable mention.

VASID All-State Teams:

Coach of the Year: Tony Shaver (W&M)

Player of the Year: Art Parakhouski (Radford)

1st team:
Art Parakhouski (Radford)
Kevin Anderson (Richmond)
Malcolm Delaney (Virginia Tech)
Gerald Lee (ODU)
Larry Sanders (VCU)

2nd team:

Denzel Bowles (JMU)
Michael DeLoach (Norfolk St.)
David Gonzalvez (Richmond)
David Schneider (W&M)
Dana Smith (Longwood)

Honorable Mention:

Dorenzo Hudson (Virginia Tech)
Austin Kenon (VMI)
Sylven Landesberg (Virginia)
Quinn McDowell (W&M)
Joey Rodriguez (VCU)

Congrats to both Joey and Larry for being recognized by the VASID!

i think there should have been room on second team for rodriguez.

i also think bowles should be first team over both sanders and lee.
he was better than both, plain and simple.

Absolutely 100% agree. Bowles is the best big man in this conference. He made Larry look like a little boy both times we played them.

I suspect the fact that he only played half the year, and that for JMU also hurt him.

Maybe there were some point guards in the commonwealth that had gaudier numbers, but was there a better floor general on the court than JRod by season's end?

leaving out Bazemore, especially with Lee that high, seems a bit dodgy

I don't follow Longwood or Norfolk State even a little bit... but are you (rhetorical) telling me that those two are really deserving over some of the others (either h.m. or not included)?

Don't know much about Longwood but Deloach from NSU was deserving the guy was a beast

meh. 8 pts. and 4 boards a game isn't going to get you much recognition in the state, though he is pretty solid on defense.

if bazemore deserves recognition, so would burgess.

Yeah, I suppose... and maybe Hassel, Finney, Bazemore, and Carter all cancel eachother out... it just seems like the 'narchs are under-represented considering they won the CAA (and therefore bested the most other state teams) and probably would have gotten an at-large if they had needed to

I also agree Bowles should have been first team. I think there is a very good chance he could be player of the year next year in both the CAA and the VASID All State.

i have issues with the love affair with ODU....basically Blame Taylor built a defensive team that used his offense to take as much time off the game clock as they could. Then they lead the world in offensive rebounding cuz they cant hit the broad side of the barn.Is this model the futeure..gawd I hope not..

I tried explaining to people that, that was exactly how they would beat Notre Dame. Low and behold they did. It is amazing how far simple size advantage will get you in any tourney level. I can't take too much away from them though, they produced when they needed too on the offensive end (that three that I think finney sank and buried us in the CAA tourney is what sticks out to me).

SANDERS, RODRIGUEZ EARN VASID ALL-STATE HONORS

RICHMOND, Va. – There’s a stark contrast between juniors Larry Sanders (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Joey Rodriguez (Oviedo, Fla.).

One would be good at putting items on the top shelf of the pantry, the other would be good at the bottom shelf. One would be good at a game of limbo, the other? Not so much.

On the basketball court however, both of them were the leaders of the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball team that ripped off a record of 27-9 and the 2010 College Basketball Invitational Championship. Earlier this week, the duo earned VaSID All-State honors for their outstanding seasons.

isn't this award kinda like saying hey I'm the fastest kid on the playground? Sure you are the best in your elementary school but who cares lol.
