tuned in just in time. interesting to see Shaka admit the lack of player leadership last year and how that was what he asked Joey, Ed, Brandon to work on that as much as their games this offseason

said Toby will be the biggest impact of the newcomers. Said Rob has improved most since school started but he is hurt by all the guys at his position. Reco has a long way to go but tremendous talent; Juvonte runs the floor maybe better than Larry; DJ has to adjust to his new body size; Heath longer to go since got in later and time missed during senior year with injury.

How do you work on leadership in the offseason // Its kind of a natural born attribute for the most part IMO

Great--we're definetly going to need inside presence, and more depth--one of the frosh must develop/give strong minutes.

I know we seldom red shirt, but I wonder if Reco & Rob are perfect candidates? [always injuries, and coaches know best...I just wonder out loud here]

Reco will still need to likely share PT next year behind Brad and challenge Trev, correct? Rob is hard for me to project because of on-going position depth...how much of redshirting might be up to each individual player?

I remember having a similar exchange as this on RamNation regarding Brandon during his Freshman year...would be great this year and next if he was now a junior, no?

I dont see any redshirts happening. How do you tell an all star kid he needs to redshirt after all the hype he has gone thru in recruiting? I dont know how our staff deals with it but I would let it be the players option with coaches approval.
Take the case of Rob B. ---he has been mentioned as a possible candidate before practice ever started (?) on this board because their are 8 guys vying for PT in three spots? Well if he did redshirt, it would be 7 for 3 spots and 8 for 3 spots again next year-same deal. If Grayson didnt redshirt, I dont think it will happen under Smart. The Hinton redshirt is entirely different beause you are dealing with a walk-on that was gauranteed nothing but a uniform.

Also a couple of injuries, poor grades, bad attitudes, etc. could devastate a team with redshirts, God forbid.

the only worry in redshirting might be that they look at it as if they are going to miss the year anyway maybe they should use that year transferring somewhere they will play. redshirts are a possibility with all our depth, but not sure they happen. listening to shaka houston and reco sounded like the most likely in terms of readiness to be redshirted. we will see, practice has officially begun.

Sometimes a guy won't mind a redshirt year compared to a year on the bench taking mop up duty

It also helps to balance out classes so you aren't trying to fill 5 scholarships every four years
