Anyone else who was at the banquet tonight, feel free to jump in...but it sounded to me like President Rao was basically saying they are about to announce football....as in tomorrow.

How far off am I on that?

I was taking pics so I didn't write down quotes...but President Rao was talking about a "huge announcement"...something "long over due"...and basically every other way to allude to..."we're about to announce our starting football" he could say without actually saying it. Said something about meeting with the board of visitors or something tomorrow. I know someone in here paid better attention than me, so hook it up

?????!!!!!!!!

That's what I thought when I heard him. I'm telling you, there's been a ton of talk...but hearing what I heard from our schools President tonight, it sounds like football, or at least the plan to start it...is about to come to VCU, almost immediately.

Question: If football is going to be here where are we going to play it?

Cary St. Field? Sports Backer? Inside at Richmond coliseum? Where would we play?

I would assume City Stadium at first. Richmond will be gone to play in their brand new facility...and I think they rented City Stadium for something like $1 or some crazy situation like that? I'd love an on campus facility, but I just imagine that or Sports Backers is the obvious answer to start.

Tell me where to send my check

but I'd guess City stadium for some years and then renovate sports backers?

Also guessing ODU starting off as great as they did put the press on us

City/UR Stadium, as a faciltiy, is in serious jeopardy - a housing development offers much more "sure" money to the city or Richmond than some cross-your-fingers and hope VCU football project.

However ....

When VCU/soon removed removed RPI announced it was going "big time" in basketball in the early '70s, the naysayers were screaming "NO" from the top of City Hall. And look what happened - the Rams could have defeated virtually any team in the nation this past winter.

Here's the sticking point: Rams' spirit is rocketing through The Stu's rafters now, based on unprecedented success - but what would happen with a few lean years? I'm thinking the fickle ticket-buying public would retreat to the late '70s in terms of student/alumni/community involvement, if mediocrity reared its unfashionable noggin.

Success is not an upward grading curve without deviation. Not so long ago, JMU basically sold out for the season when the Lefthander was named coach. Now, following continued turmoil, Dukes' games in Harrisonburg look like little more than intramural contests in terms of seats occupied.

Dr. Rao has hinted at it at several VCU events on the medical campus in the past couple of months. There has been considerable noise from the boosters since ODU started up there program.

I am still EXTREMELY skeptical with our PISS-POOR financial support and the Richmond market already run by UVA and Virginia Tech. Even JMU has a huge presence in Richmond for their football games and that will only increase with their massive stadium upgrades. VCU has neither the money, resources, or fan support to get it done the way we have to do it if we want it done properly. Not to mention the fact that we don't have anywhere to play...and City Stadium is a DUMP.

I have to think that the main reason for this is imminent conference shake-ups and VCU not wanting to get left out in the cold as it did when it lost Metro membership about 15 years ago. That said, Dr. Rao has come from a FBS school at Central Michigan (which plays in the MAC) and probably understands football's appeal with regards to a more traditional college experience as well as developing more alumni involvement.

say what??

We don't. We can't sellout a 7,500 seat arena with two first-round NBA draft picks in consecutive years with upwards of 32,000 students alone and only 1000 or so donors. That's not reassuring when start-up schools like ODU have almost 10 times that number of donors. When it comes to football we are not the only game in town as the vast majority of Richmonders are Tech and UVA fans, and there are a lot of JMU football fans in Richmond as it is, and that is only going to increase with the BIG-TIME stadium upgrades that will attract the casual fan not already affiliated to Tech and UVA. Where would you go? UVA, Tech, or JMU? Or VCU at City Stadium which is falling apart and is so useless the city is willing to rent it out for a dollar a day.
